Submission + - Apple Misinterprets Immersion Sensor Data? (hardmac.com)

Gomphos writes: "Apple may be erroneously declining warranty coverage due to misinterpreted immersion sensor data. From the article on hardmac.com: "Apple indicates that these pastilles [immersion sensors] cannot turn pink without water, which is false after the tests of 3M. The other point is that Apple states that the colour pink also implied an immersion of the pastille and this is also false. Bright red indicates immersion, pink is able to come from ambient humidity. In short, we fear that a too broad interpretation of the color of these pastilles does not lead Apple to cancel guarantees on machines just due to humidity or of condensation, a thing which can always happen, as all the wearers of glasses will testify!""

Submission + - Kazaa to return as a legal subscription service (cnet.com)

suraj.sun writes: One of the most recognizable brands in the history of illegal downloading is due to officially resurface, perhaps as early as next week, sources close to the company told CNET News. Only this time the name Kazaa will be part of a legal music service.

Altnet and parent company Brilliant Digital Entertainment attached the Kazaa brand to a subscription service that will offer songs and ringtones from all four of the major recording companies. For the past few months, a beta version has been available.

The company tried recently to ratchet up expectations with a series of vague, and what some considered misguided, press releases.

The site will open with over 1 million tracks. According to the blog TorrentFreak, the new Kazaa will offer unlimited downloads for $20 a month.

Submission + - Computerized Election Results With No Election 2

_Sharp'r_ writes: "According to breaking Spanish language newspaper reports, (translations available, USA Today mention), Honduran authorities have seized 45 computers containing certified election results for the constitutional election Zelaya wanted, but that never took place. The "certified" and detailed electronic records of the non-existent election show Zelaya's side having won overwhelmingly."

Submission + - Automated Propane Tank Monitoring?

hrbrmstr writes: "We just moved into our new house where we have two decent-sized above ground liquid propane tanks that feed the dryer, hot water heater and backup generator. I googled for solutions for residential propane tank level monitoring (since we need to call the provider when it gets down to 20%) and really didn't find anything of use (there's a Robert Shaw device that won't work in this application). I'm looking to roll my own either with a wired or wireless, low-light camera above the gauge which I could write a program to snap an image of and determine the level. If I go that route, I'd like recommendations on good and preferably inexpensive cameras that can operate at close range to the gauges for said application, but I'm also curious as to whether other DIY slashdotters have rigged something up to do the same thing or have suggestions for replacement gauges that can be tied into a ZigBee, Insteon or X10 home automation system. I realize the very doable low-tech solution of checking the gauges a couple of times per week is not exactly a laborious task, but it would be much cooler to get it going digitally."

Looser Pays intitiative is to revolutionise UK Mobile market
A group consisting of all major UK mobile operators today announced its intention to introduce a revolutionary billing scheme aimed to increase network air time usage. The founding members of this initiative are 3G Three, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone agreed to cooperate closely on implementing the new billing technology that will be marketed as Looser Pays. The core idea is that the cost of the call will be billed to the party that hangs up first. Unlike the previously used system where the calling party i. e. the party that initiated the phone call had to be charged and as a result deterred many customers from initiating a phone call, now the party that disconnects first will be the one to bear the charges. This groundbreaking initiative is expected to increase combined total air-time of the founding networks roughly by 500%. Analysts estimate that this will increase the profits by the same value of 500%. Future administration and development of the scheme will be handled by an independent entity sponsored by all involved networks.
