Submission + - Retro "Picodore" DIY PDA

Jeek Elemental writes: Its alive! jtwinters on the http://jledger.proboards19.com/index.cgi PETSCII forums presents:

I had an old PSOne LCD screen lying around and I thought I'd make a C64 laptop. Actually, it's more like a C64 PDA! It measures 6.5 x 6 x 1.5 inches (15.5 x 16.5 x 4 cm) when closed. It can run from an AC wall adapter or 6 NiMH AA batteries. The keyboard is hacked from a portable folding keyboard for a Jornada PDA which outputs RS-232. I'm using a PIC 16F88 to decode the signals and re-encode them to PS/2 (that was an ordeal to figure out).

One Laptop Per Child and Intel Join Forces 143

dan the person writes "A Wired piece informs us that Intel and the OLPC project have put their bickering behind them. They have joined forces to ensure 'the maximum number of laptops will reach children'. '"What happened in the past has happened," said Will Swope of Intel. "But going forward, this allows the two organisations to go do a better job and have better impact for what we are both very eager to do which is help kids around the world." "Intel joins the OLPC board as a world leader in technology, helping reach the world's children. Collaboration with Intel means that the maximum number of laptops will reach children," said Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop per Child. The new agreement means that Intel will sit alongside companies such as Google and Red Hat as partners in the OLPC scheme.'"

Article Snippet:

"For those who frequently use Skype, I can't see a reason not to buy the Logitech Cordless Internet Handset. The menus are easy to navigate through and the phone is easily synced with a Skype contact list, so all that is required to make calls is a PC with Skype running. The phone can do the rest. Call quality is great and installation is as simple as it gets.""

Submission + - Wind Generator that makes it's own wind

ayelvington writes: For the starting bid of $12,000,000 (Paypal preferred) you can have the trade secret to a wind generator that makes its own wind. Found this trolling Ebay The seller goes on for sometime making an appeal for a Gates or Gore to pony up, save the planet, and make a buck in the mean time. An interesting read, but not likely to power your laptop soon...

Submission + - Xbox360 Failure Rate Embarrassment for Microsoft

btavshan writes: Despite the empassioned arguments on here previously suggesting that high Xbox360 failure rates were fictitious, it now seems there is some truth to the "my Xbox360 failed 15 times, zomg!" story. The Seattle Times reports today that Microsoft is extending the warranty coverage for the Xbox 360 from one year to three years in response to an "unacceptable" failure rate. As it has already been previously reported that the Xbox franchise is a profit loser for Microsoft, could this spell trouble in Redmond?

Submission + - History of the CD-ROM

Gammu writes: The inventor of the compact disc, the most popular medium in the world for playing back and storing music, is often disputed as one individual did not invent every part of the compact disc. The most attributed inventor is James Russell, who in 1965 was inspired with a revolutionary idea as he sketched on paper a more ideal music recording system to replace vinyl records; Russell envisioned a system which could record and replay sounds without any physical contact between parts.

Submission + - 33% of the XBox 360 are defective? (dailytech.com)

sodul writes: DailyTech has contacted several retailers to get the actual percentage of XBox failures. While Microsoft is claiming a 'normal' 3% rate, the retailers claim that one third of the XBox are breaking. This is the highest failure rate ever witnessed by the retailers while the other consoles like the PS3 have a less than 1% failure rate. This could explain The Man Who Went Through 11 Xbox 360s.

Submission + - Compressed Air Car

FridayBob writes: Yesterday, a Belgian newspaper published this article (translation) about a new car that runs on nothing but compressed air. Apparently, it can run for about 200km on a tank of air filled up to a pressure of 300 bar (4351 psi). Special filling stations can refill an empty tank in only 3 minutes, but the car can also refill itself in six hours using an electrical outlet and its own on-board compressor. The car was developed by MDI (lots of info), a company set up by French engineer, Guy Nègre (ex-Formula One), that makes its money by selling patents and manufacturing licenses. It will become available in Belgium some time next year for a minimum price of only EUR 4,000 ($5,402). The Indian company, Tata, have also bought a manufacturing license and plan to sell a model for as little as EUR 1,835 ($2,478). This Wikipedia article has some interesting information regarding the air engine. Until a good enough battery appears with which to run an electric car, this seems like an excellent solution.

Submission + - Slug-like solar motorcycle wins in Barcelona (plentymag.com)

mdsolar writes: "A solar powered motorcycle won the prize for Best Innovative Technology at the Barcelona International Auto Show. It works by extending a shell cover to increase power collecting area when not in use. The speed is 30 mph and the range is 13 miles, but hey, it's solar. The cover, when extended makes the parked bike look like a gardern slug. Read more and see a picture here."

Submission + - MacBook Killer?

An anonymous reader writes: It looks like Samsung's new Q45 could be a real competitor to Apple's MacBook. The Samsung is finished in glossy black like the Apple, but weighs only 1.83kg compared the MacBook at 2.31kg. But when you consider that the Q45 is around the same price as the entry level MacBook and has 2GB RAM, DVD writer, PCMCIA slot and pretty much all the features that the Apple has, it begins to look very attractive. OK, so you're getting Vista instead of Tiger, but you're also getting a smaller, lighter, better featured and cheaper laptop! http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/200 7/06/26/Samsung-Q45/p1
