Submission + - Researchers claim GM corn is dangerous for humans

miahfost writes: "Gene-modified corn MON 863 which has recently been approved for the European market should immediately be forbidden claims the French research group CRII-GEN, who recently completed the only independent analysis of Monsanto's test data for the corn. MON 863, designed to produce a pesticide through gene manipulation, when fed to female rats increased the levels of sugar and fat in their bloodstream. The GM corn also increased the size and weight of the liver as well as impaired kidney function. In male rats the liver shrunk. Note that toxic substances often affect the different sexes differently though the study was too short to identify specific illness that the GM corn was causing, however detoxification organs were clearly being affected. Here is the report in French CRII-GEN report. Here is an article in Swedish: SvD article."

Submission + - Someone In Congress Actually Understands Mixtapes!

An anonymous reader writes: Most of us (for pretty good reasons!) have come to assume that our Congressional representatives are pretty far out of touch when it comes to things like technology and culture, but it's nice to see that at least one Congressman seems to understand that mixtapes and mashups aren't such a bad thing. Techdirt has the transcript of Rep. Mike Doyle's speech, which talks about the benefits of mixtapes, while wondering about why DJ Drama was arrested: "I hope that everyone involved will take a step back and ask themselves if mash-ups and mix-tapes are really different or if it's the same as Paul McCartney admitting that he nicked the Chuck Berry bass-riff and used it on the Beatle's hit 'I Saw Her Standing There.' Maybe it is. And, maybe Drama violated some clear bright lines. Or, maybe mixtapes are a powerful tool. And, maybe mash-ups are transformative new art that expands the consumers experience and doesn't compete with what an artist has made available on iTunes or at the CD store. And, I don't think Sir Paul asked for permission to borrow that bass line, but every time I listen to that song, I'm a little better off for him having done so...."

Submission + - Scientists Break Speed of Light

PreacherTom writes: Scientists at the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, NJ are reporting that they have broken the speed of light. For the experiment, the researchers manipulated a vapor of laser-irradiated atoms, causing a pulse that shoots about 300 times faster than it would take the pulse to go the same distance in a vacuum, to the point where the pulse seemed to exit the chamber before even entering it. Apparently, Uncle Albert is still resting comfortably: relativity only states that an object with mass cannot travel faster than light. Still, the results are sufficient to merit publication in the prestigious journal, Nature.

An anonymous reader writes: Tanker Bob blogs over at MobileTechReview.com about his increasing frustrations with Windows, DRM and the like. So he details how he jumped ship to Linux (Ubuntu with KDE). It's got a blow-by-blow that's technical yet useful for newbies thinking of making the switch.
