GNU is Not Unix

Submission + - GNU Emacs 24.1 released! (gnu.org)

larry bagina writes: GNU Emacs 24.1 has been released. New features include bi-directional text and right-to-left (think Arabic or Hebrew) and lexical scoping in emacs lisp. I know a lot of us were still using vi for those reasons, so this is exciting news.

Submission + - Chumby is Dead (theverge.com)

larry bagina writes: It's official: Chumby is no more. You're probably wondering how this could have happened. You're probably also wondering what the fuck chumby was. A social network? iPhone App? An English TV show? And more importantly, why did they name it after a pecker synonym? I guess we'll never know — or care.
The Almighty Buck

Submission + - Amazon profit drops (bloomberg.com)

larry bagina writes: The Kindle Fire was supposed to be an iPad killer. Turns out, all it killed was Amazon's bottom line. Apple sold 15.4 million iPads last quarter, Amazon sold ... well, they won't say how many they sold, but it's up 177% over some other number that they won't disclose. Estimates are 6 million Kindle Fires at a $10-$20 loss per tablet, though those numbers alone wouldn't account for the $239 million drop in profit from last year — and that's ignoring the 35% in sales.
Android

Submission + - Motorola announces 4th quarter earnings (paidcontent.org)

larry bagina writes: Look out, Apple! Motorola sold^Hshipped 5.3 million Android phones and 200,000 Xooms last quarter. Numbers like that are probably why Google is paying $12 billion to buy them up. It's also why Apple should probably throw in the towel in iOS and focus on Macs.
Electronic Frontier Foundation

Submission + - Supreme Court allows public domain foreign works t (washingtonpost.com)

larry bagina writes: “Nothing in the historical record, congressional practice, or our own jurisprudence warrants exceptional First Amendment solicitude for copyrighted works that were once in the public domain.” That's the Supreme Court's reasoning for allowing public domain works to be locked up under copyright again.
Microsoft

Submission + - Microsoft to pay $10-$15 bribe per Windows phone s (windowsitpro.com)

larry bagina writes: Unofficial Microsoft PR mouthpiece Paul Thurrott reports that Microsoft/Nokia are planning to spend $200 million (or more) to push Windows Mobile. "Included in the plan are sales incentives for retail workers, aimed at getting them to finally start recommending Windows Phone as an alternative to Android and iPhone. The amount of payments are $10 to $15 per handset sold, depending on the number sold, for some handset models."

The mac blogger cabal shit a brick over his revelation that he saw internal Microsoft documents and didn't immediately report on them.

Android

Submission + - Definition of "Open" changed (parislemon.com)

larry bagina writes: the definition of open: “mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make”

So said Andy Rubin. But for some unexplained reason, that famous tweet has been deleted. Gone. As if that never was the definition of "open" at all.

Chrome

Submission + - Google now paying Mozilla $300 million/year (allthingsd.com)

larry bagina writes: No need to wait for the annual reports to find out how much the new Google/Mozilla deal was worth — sources reveal it was in the neighborhood of $1 billion for three years. You'll probably remember from previous slashdot speculation that Microsoft might make a bid (they did, as did yahoo ) or that Google would get a better price (ha!) as Chrome became more popular than FireFox.
News

Submission + - Kim Jong Il is dead (ap.org)

larry bagina writes: Kim Jong Il, that North Korean guy with the crazy hair, has died from "fatigue during a train ride" on Saturday. He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was rumored to have diabetes (and possibly syphilis given his erratic behavior).
SourceForge

Submission + - FileZilla becomes Sourceforge Top Download (slashdot.org) 3

larry bagina writes: Filezilla has become the 4th most popular source forge top download, edging out 5th place PortableApps.com: Portable Software/USB. This, of course, raises (not begs, thank you) the question: Why the fuck is there a "sourceforge top downloads" box on the front page and why can't it be disabled?

Submission + - Sad News - Andy Rooney Dead ay 92 (cbsnews.com)

larry bagina writes: I just heard some sad news on cbsnews.com — cranky old guy Andy Rooney was found dead in his New York City hospital bed last night. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him — even if you didn't ignore his work, there is no denying he was on a tv show you didn't watch. Truly an American icon.
