Submission + - Windows Mobile OS Runs On an iPhone (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "Programmer and developer, Erik Kristiansen, showed off his app in action at the recent myPhone2008 convention in Las Vegas. Kristiansen's application operates similar to Apple's Bootcamp in that it allows you to load either the iPhone OS or the Windows Mobile OS when the iPhone boots up. Running Windows Mobile, the iPhone appears to have full functionality as a Windows smartphone, including (of course) making phone calls. Kristiansen's program is currently in beta, but he says it should be available as an open source application in January."

Submission + - Mysteries Swirl Around Cyclones at Saturn's Poles (nasa.gov)

Riding with Robots writes: "New images of Saturn from the robotic spacecraft Cassini are shedding new light on monstrous storms that swirl at both poles of the ringed planet. "These are truly massive cyclones, hundreds of times stronger than the most giant hurricanes on Earth," said one mission scientist. Cumulus clouds twirl around the vortices, betraying the presence of giant thunderstorms lurking beneath. But the storms do not disturb the bizarre hexagonal cloud formation previously reported."

Submission + - Google to buy Valve

Frosty Piss writes: "According to The Inquirer, Google is set to buy Valve. 'Valve has the best content distribution platform out there, bar none. Steam may have had rough patches here and there, but they are almost all ironed out now, and just about everyone that matters has signed up to use it. When Google picks them up, it will be a clean kill, no one else will matter. It is a good buy for them, a good thing for Valve, and in general, good for everyone except MS. Then again, they are irrelevant now, so who cares?'"

Watching China Turn Off the Pollution 427

NewbieV points out coverage of the effort to assess Beijing's air pollution control efforts. Quote from one of the investigators: "This will be a very interesting experiment that can never happen again." Here's the main project scientist's site on the monitoring effort, and Newsweek coverage that brings out a paradoxical effect of reducing pollution on global warming. "Unmanned aerial vehicles are measuring emissions of soot and other forms of black carbon. The instruments are observing pollution transport patterns as Beijing enacts its 'great shutdown' for the Summer Olympic Games. Chinese officials have compelled reductions in industrial activity by as much as 30 percent and cuts in automobile use by half to safeguard the health of competing athletes immediately before and during the games."

Submission + - Global Cooling?

d3ac0n writes: The Australian reports a few inconvenient truths regarding global climate change that have yet to receive much attention from a media sold on global warming. Not only has the Earth cooled since its peak year in 1998, not only are oceans cooler than predicted, but new NASA data shows that the computer models that predicted runaway global warming were based on a fundamental error. Rather than having clouds and water vapor amplifying the warming effect of carbon in the atmosphere, it turns out that they compensate for it! Submission + - How Much Unix Does Microsoft Own? 1

An anonymous reader writes: In the wake of recent threats from Microsoft that Linux violates its patents, InfoWeek blogger John Foley attempted to find out just exactly how much Unix and open-source code Microsoft actually owns. Microsoft has a historical connection, via Xenix, its 25-year-old Unix clone, and Windows Services for Unix, which includes a Unix subsystem. But the trail quickly gets murky, because ownership of Xenix was transferred to the original SCO in 1987. It's also unclear whether Microsoft's 2004 deal with Sun resulted in any firm patent cross-licenses. Microsoft stonewalled Foley's requests for information, though one PR rep claimed that: "Microsoft has 65 patents in Linux GUIs, 15 patents in e-mail, 42 patents in Linux Kernel, 45 patents in Open Office, and 68 other patents that read on open source." Asks Foley: "Is Microsoft-patented code in Unix?, What Unix technologies does Microsoft continue to develop?, Where is Unix code used in Microsoft's own product line?" If it's threatening litigation, shouldn't Microsoft put up or shut up?
Education

Submission + - School Bans Valedictorian Honors to Protect Studen (blogspot.com) 8

Advocate123 writes: As a result of these ridiculous policies, gifted students are locked in a box of mediocrity. Students who dedicate their lives toward academics, and excel, are ridiculed by fellow peers. Even worse, disgraceful teachers force the best and the brightest students to be patient with students who neither demonstrate the effort nor intelligence to succeed. The boredom resulting from a lack of high expectations is painful to endure for many students. In Colorado this past Tuesday, the Boulder Valley school district engaged in the most recent example of insanity by baning valedictorian honors.

Submission + - EarthLink Says No Future for Municipal Wi-Fi (wifinetnews.com)

Glenn Fleishman writes: "EarthLink dropped its final bombshell on city-wide Wi-Fi, saying that it wouldn't put more money in and was talking to their current deployed cities about the future. The company had won bids in dozens of cities, and then backed out of the majority of them before building or finalizing contracts a few months ago. The remaining towns they were building out, like New Orleans, Anaheim, and Philadelphia, will ostensibly be turned off unless local officials come up with scratch or a plan of their own. EarthLink pioneered the model of free-for-fee networks, where there would be no cost or upfront commitment from cities, and EarthLink would charge for network access. Apparently, you can't make money that way."

Submission + - Feds Confiscate Private Gold & Silver

CranberryKing writes: I am surprised this hasn't been posted already. Here is TV coverage and the original e-mail I received yesterday: Dear Liberty Dollar Supporters: I sincerely regret to inform you that about 8:00 this morning a dozen FBI and Secret Service agents raided the Liberty Dollar office in Evansville. For approximately six hours they took all the gold, all the silver, all the platinum and almost two tons of Ron Paul Dollars that where just delivered last Friday. They also took all the files, all the computers and froze our bank accounts. We have no money. We have no products. We have no records to even know what was ordered or what you are owed. We have nothing but the will to push forward and overcome this massive assault on our liberty and our right to have real money as defined by the US Constitution. We should not to be defrauded by the fake government money. But to make matters worse, all the gold and silver that backs up the paper certificates and digital currency held in the vault at Sunshine Mint has also been confiscated. Even the dies for mint the Gold and Silver Libertys have been taken. This in spite of the fact that Edmond C. Moy, the Director of the Mint, acknowledged in a letter to a US Senator that the paper certificates did not violate Section 486 and were not illegal. But the FBI and Services took all the paper currency too. The possibility of such action was the reason the Liberty Dollar was designed so that the vast majority of the money was in specie form and in the people's hands. Of the $20 million Liberty Dollars, only about a million is in paper or digital form. I regret that if you are due an order. It may be some time until it will be filled... if ever... it now all depends on our actions. Everyone who has an unfulfilled order or has digital or paper currency should band together for a class action suit and demand redemption. We cannot allow the government to steal our money! Please don't let this happen!!! Many of you read the articles quoting the government and Federal Reserve officials that the Liberty Dollar was legal. You did nothing wrong. You are legally entitled to your property. Let us use this terrible act to band together and further our goal — to return America to a value based currency. Please forward this important Alert... so everyone who possess or use the Liberty Dollar is aware of the situation. Please click HERE to sign up for the class action lawsuit and get your property back! If the above link does not work you can access the page by copying the following into your web browser. http://www.libertydollar.org/classaction/index.php Thanks again for your support at this darkest time as the damn government and their dollar sinks to a new low.
