Doesn't say much for AMD when they're comparing to Intel's entry-level processors. And they lost me at integrated ATI graphincs. I gave up on their shitty drivers many years ago. Doesn't matter how fast their GPUs are if the software side is full of bugs. They'r ethe best example of "just get it out the door. we'll fis the bugs in teh next version", But they never do...

Comment Re:OTA HDTV is awesome (Score 0) 479

That's pretty much the same view I had of the whole cable thing. I was spending $75/mo on cable, or $900/yr. I figured I could cancel my cable, buy an OTA antenna and build a DVR PC with the savings. The antenna was $40 and the PC was $700 (i3-based PC with Win7 and a Hauppage 2250 dual tuner). I run Windows Media Center which has been incredible. I PVR pretty much everything I want and have more programming on the drive than I could ever watch. I broke even after 10 months and that was 2 years ago. Best part is, the picture quality kills cable. I'm fortunate that I live in Toronto on the 20th floorof a condo so I can pick up 20 US and Canadian channels but I have an AppleTV as well which I solely use for Netflix. So I went from $75/mo to $7.99/mo and I'm happier than I've ever been.

What kind of moron buys 10 year old software? If you're too narrow minded to see the benefits of Win 7 over XP then you probably got what you deserved (and probably don't see the difference anyway). Seriously? Is Win 7 too expensive for you, or not up to your standards? Really?

The Sun Unleashes Coronal Mass Ejection At Earth 220

astroengine writes "Yesterday morning, at 08:55 UT, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory detected a C3-class flare erupt inside a sunspot cluster. 100,000 kilometers away, deep within the solar atmosphere (the corona), an extended magnetic field filled with cool plasma forming a dark ribbon across the face of the sun (a feature known as a 'filament') erupted at the exact same time. It seems very likely that both eruptions were connected after a powerful shock wave produced by the flare destabilized the filament, causing the eruption. A second solar observatory, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, then spotted a huge coronal mass ejection blast into space, straight in the direction of Earth. Solar physicists have calculated that this magnetic bubble filled with energetic particles should hit Earth on August 3, so look out for some intense aurorae — a solar storm is coming."

Plastic Bottle Catamaran Crosses The Pacific Ocean 56

The Plastiki, a catamaran made with plastic bottles, has completed a 8,000 mile trip between San Francisco and Sydney. Captain David de Rothschild said, "The Plastiki is literally a metaphorical message in a bottle about beating waste and reducing our human fingerprints on our natural environment." The boat will go on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum for the next month.

15-Year-Old Student Discovers New Pulsar 103

For the second time in as many years, a student has made a discovery while participating in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC), a joint program between the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and West Virginia University designed to get students and teachers involved in analyzing data from the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This time it was high school sophomore Shay Bloxton, who discovered a brand new pulsar. "For Bloxton, the pulsar discovery may be only her first in a scientific career. 'Participating in the PSC has definitely encouraged me to pursue my dream of being an astrophysicist,' she said, adding that she hopes to attend West Virginia University to study astrophysics. Late last year, another West Virginia student, from South Harrison High School, Lucas Bolyard, discovered a pulsar-like object called a rotating radio transient. His discovery also came through participation in the PSC."
