The major point that most people miss is, healthcare providers know that people without insurance probably can't pay the bill. They know that those people probably will file bankruptcy instead.
So what do the healthcare providers do? They jack up the price. If you know you're only going to get $.10 on the dollar of what you are charging, you just charge 10 times as much. Insurance companies can get adjustments, but a person w/out insurance can not.

Bankruptcy is expensive and inefficient, but more than half of them in the US are caused by medical crises. That's something that can be fixed legislative. Its actual inefficiency that can be fixed to make this stupid country slightly better, but people won't shut up about death panels and socialism or in this case, pretending that there isn't a better alternative.
