Holy crap, this whole time I thought Safari just didn't have a feature to re-open a tab, and it turns out it does after all!! I feel... disappointed in myself for not knowing this. ;) But really, Apple should get with the program and add the Cmd-Shift-T shortcut to help out folks coming from other browsers. Right now it's not mapped to anything so it's not like it's going to cause a conflict. And also, it's nice to be able to reopen a tab independently of, say, undoing that comment you just typed...

Windows for ARM was and still is a great idea. But Windows RT as they implemented it was incredibly dumb from the get-go.

MS: "Why don't we offer a 'pure' ARM tablet experience, but throw in the desktop anyway since we can't manage to fulfill our own App Store restrictions with Office. But at the same time, we're too disorganized to come up with an emulation layer for x86 so let's disallow all desktop apps for ARM (except for Office, but screw all other developers)! That should go over great!"

Consumers: "OK, so this machine has great battery life but only runs a fraction of the apps of either Windows 8 or Android tablets? And yet it still includes a misfit desktop mode that's totally useless for anything but Office? WTF???"

Fox News Parent NewsCorp May Face Corruption Investigation 145

rtfa-troll writes "The Guardian reports that News Corporation may face FCPA investigations after an 'official of the British ministry of defence' was charged 'for allegedly receiving £100,000 from Murdoch's tabloid newspapers.' News Corporation, headed by Rupert Murdoch, is loved by most of the readers of Slashdot as the owner of Fox News and as the company which put the overly complicated paywall on the Wall Street Journal. The article states that the charges 'would be hard for the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission to ignore and would warrant investigation under the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act which could lead to risks for 27 TV licences within the Fox network.'"

Researchers Develop Surveillance System That Can Watch & Predict 106

hypnosec writes "Carnegie Mellon university researchers have developed a surveillance system that can not only recognize human activities but can also predict what might happen next. Scientists, through the Army-funded research dubbed Mind's Eye, have created intelligent software that recognizes human activities in video and can predict what might just happen next; sounding an alarm if it detects anomalous behavior. By supporting this bundle you are supporting open-source educational software and the project (AbulEdu) that is making the development of this software possible. If you don't feel like these particular programs are worth your money fine, but at least the idea is a noble one. Instead of complaining about the state of things and bragging about how you could do things better, why not try to get involved in one of these projects and actually make a difference that has the potential to benefit students around the world?

Disclaimer: I don't work for the company or have anything to do with this project; I just found out about it via this news item. Just my 2c.

Technically maybe, but in real use, just about every native English speaker will understand the first to mean that I'm doing it right now and the second to mean that I do it habitually.

Ants Turned Into 'Supersoldiers' 80

New submitter jmcdougald.esq sends word that a team of researchers from McGill University has tinkered with the development of a type of ant to produce what they call a 'supersoldier' subcaste — ants that are much larger than average workers but only appear naturally in a few species (abstract). The team's work showed that by exposing the ant larvae to a hormone-like chemical, they could induce 'supersoldier' growth in many more species. "This result suggests that supersoldiers existed in the common ancestor of the entire genus. Even though the supersoldier subcaste eventually disappeared in most species, the ants kept the potential to make it. Because the same hormone sets the fate of both supersoldiers and soldiers, it may not have been possible to completely lose one without compromising the other. ... In some species that evolved later, such as Pheidole obtusospinosa, the supersoldiers became a permanent addition. Whereas most Pheidole species simply evacuate their nests when army ants invade, for some reason P. obtusospinosa find it beneficial to stay, which makes supersoldiers a useful addition to the community."

You sir, are full of misinformation. When you set Swing to use native LaF, it actually uses the system's own drawing of the widgets. That's true on Windows, Mac and Linux/GTK+. Has been for years. Only in certain areas (e.g. the file dialog boxes) can you tell that it's not native, because of the layout and functionality, not the LaF.
