Comment Re:Study Abroad FTW (Score 1) 386

I went to foreign campuses of my US-based university. Actually, I started/completed my schooling entirely overseas, so while I could have gone to school in the US, I elected to do it all abroad.

If you live in the States, that's probably the best course of action; go to a US school that has good international transfer options.

Submission + - Hybrid robot controlled by a moth's living brain.

EvilMachine writes: "Charles M. Higgins, an associate professor at the University of Arizona, has created a robot that is controlled by the living brain and the eyes of a moth.

The robot's motion is guided by a tiny electrode implanted in the moth's brain, Higgins said, specifically to a single neuron that is responsible for keeping the moth's vision steady during flight. The neuron transmits electrical signals which are then amplified in the robot's base and through a mathematical formula, a computer translates the signals into action, making the robot move.
Higgins thinks that in 10 to 15 years, such combinations of will be fairly common.

And maybe some day... in an old book... someone will read about this as genesis 1:27 "So god created the Borg...""

Submission + - Low budget open source VGA compatible video card (mveas.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: Seeing how the Open Graphics Project is only making slow progress, a new card is being developed by a few students to get a fast, simple and above all cheap video card out the door. Started just two months ago, they're already nearing completion of the circuit board. It sports a reasonably sized reprogrammable FPGA which should kickstart development of a full-fledged open source video card in the future, and the design currently only costs about a hundred euro.

Submission + - Forgent Patent Troll Loses Again

anagama writes: "Forgent Networks, a patent troll, got the slap down by a TX jury in May when it invalidated a patent Forgent held regarding video teleconferencing over telephone lines, and today, its motion for a new trial against EchoStar was denied. In fact, the court awarded EchoStar $90k in costs. Forgent probably isn't crying that much though, it already extorted $28m from other defendants. Some of you may recall that Forgent made a business out of cheating companies for jpeg use — till their patent was largely invalidated on that front as well."

Submission + - Lumines Exploit Allows Homebrew on All PSPs

YokimaSun writes: Noobz have today released a new exploit in the game Lumines — allowing unsigned code to be ran!, from the article:" Following research in conjunction with Archaemic, Noobz are proud to present the first ever all-firmware exploit for the PSP. Based on Lumines, the "Illuminati" exploit is a user-mode exploit using a buffer overflow in the savedata file — similar to the GTA exploit. That's right — if you've got a legal UMD copy of Lumines, then you can run homebrew on your PSP — whatever the firmware version. That includes v3.50! Right now, the only homebrew is the Hello World demo released below — but in future we intend to release a HEN and downgrader."

The agreement allows Apple and Cisco to use the iPhone brand on their own products. Also, the companies said they would explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, consumer and business communications.

From the interview: (fast forward to 6:40) "I haven't ripped nobody else off." "So what's with the...Finnish guys, who say...you stole their stuff?" "That mess is so ridiculous...but I'ma tell you...I don't know who their faces are, the hell's wrong with them? It's from a video game, idiot.
