Comment Computer Science did not make Apple successful (Score 1) 113

Most of what they do is a commodity; open source software, electronics from Asia, undergrad programmers, etc. (ok maybe I am a bit overboard about programmers). What makes them successful is a focus on design, fit and finish, usability, and re-arranging existing components in new and innovative ways; e.g. taking a cell phone, a UI, wireless, a UI and creating the smart phone. This is mostly creative and artistic. A focus on CS will not save American innovation. MS actually has some smart people, but the lack of focus, vision, quality, and imagination is what is killing them

The entire point of the wall is to change the climate by preventing moist gulf air and cold air from the north from mixing. The change to the rainfall regime would probably create an even larger desert than already exists in the area. If you do not believe me look at the current climate of northern China he cites. That is what will be created.

Working in a refinery with health benefits. $15/hr, or $30K/yr, when adjusted for inflation would be about $30, or $60k/yr, these days. In contrast I am making a bit more than that but have paid off a number of student loans and pay far more for health care since then even with much more education than he ever had. He graduated the 8th grade and then got his GED.

Is this progress? I think not.

Comment Re:AP Statistics isn't really computational thinki (Score 3, Insightful) 155

If you do not understand statistics you do not understand Science and empiricism. The programmers I meet are great at Discrete Mathematics, but if you beyond that, on to some thing that requires more of an exploratory mind set and data gathering, they are way out of their depth. They do not seem to understand the difference in how you approach things. Since, IMO, most of the universe is better investigated imperically they are out of their depth with real world data. They do not know how to collect, analyze, QA, or interpret it. With the emphasis on data analytics and and "Big Data" I consider that to be dangerous.
