Submission + - Acer CEO disses Vista (i4u.com)

Noodlenose writes: "I4U reports Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci has come down hard on Microsoft for releasing an operating system that didn't give the customer any incentives to switch. In a Financial Times Deutschland interview, Mr. Lanci says that the whole industry is disappointed of Windows Vista. Microsoft made mistakes and that never before a new Microsoft OS did so little for PC and notebook sales.

Have you swapped and regretted it?"

Submission + - Astronauts Gone Wild

timeOday writes: Looks like somebody just blew a chance to inaugurate the 200-mile-high club. Lisa Nowak, a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery in July, was arrested Monday on charges of battery and attempted kidnapping after allegedly trying to subdue a romantic rival with pepper spray and abduct her from a parking lot at Orlando International Airport. It seems both women were chasing astronaut Bill Oefelein, a Navy commander. Police have recommended Nowak be held without bond.

Submission + - Jailed critic remembers 70s space colony movement

destinyland writes: In this interview 64-year-old technologist Keith Henson looks back on his 1970s advocacy for high-orbit homes with solar-powered satellites. He'd sought a positive vision to counter the fears of "world overcrowding," and the L5 Society he co-founded eventually merged with Wernher von Braun's National Space Institute to form the National Space Society. He now speculates that nanotechnology would play a role in future space colonization, which he sees as "something an individual or a small group can do, provided we maintain the desire to do so." Henson was arrested Friday for his anti-Scientology activities. In this interview he describes their first rmgroup attempt on the Scientology newsgroup as "a gang of thugs riding into town and burning down the newspaper."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - 9 Most annoying Vista "Features"

firenurse writes: "Fox news has an interesting story titled "Microsoft Windows Vista's Nine Most Annoying Features". According to the article, "Windows Vista tries hard to protect us from ourselves. One unintended consequence is that it will sometimes block actions that we purposefully generated — and not even recognize that we selected the option." Submission + - Religion among the /.-ers.

Caffeinate writes: "Having just finished reading "The God Delusion" I'm curious to test one of Dawkins' theories. Dawkins postulates that atheism is common among the "intellectual elite". I feel that Slashdot represents a higher than average intelligence as well as a well-educated crowd and I'm wondering what the religious divide is amongst /.-ers.

I'm hoping that sentiments such as this are not prevalent among this group."

Submission + - Cheap, safe, patentless cancer drug discovered

PyroMosh writes: "The New Scientist is reporting that researchers working at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada have discovered that an existing drug called dichloroacetate (DCA) is effective in killing cancer cells, while leaving the host's healthy cells unharmed. DCA has already been used for years to treat metabolic disorders, and is known to be fairly safe. Sounds like great news, is it too good to be true? Why is the mainstream news media failing to report on this potential breakthrough? The University of Alberta and the Alberta Cancer Board have set up a site with more info, where you can also donate to support future clinical trials."

French Kids Get OSS on USB Sticks 313

daria42 writes "To help make kids aware of alternatives to proprietary software the Ile-de-France, the political district of greater Paris, will give 175,000 school children and apprentices USB keys loaded with open-source software. With a word-processing program, audio and video playback capabilities, an email client and an IM client, these are essentially computers on a stick. The council touts this as 'represent[ing] for students a tool of freedom and mobility between their school, cybercafes and their home or friends' PCs'." With the prevalence of internet cafes in Europe, that might work better than in the US ... but do you think such a project would work here as well? If so, what software would you want to see loaded up?
