Comment Ads after the fact (Score 1) 249

The problem is that I only see ads for something I'm interested in after I've bought the product and I'm not interested anymore. Last week I bought a pair of yoga socks online and now I'm being inundated for the product I just bought. I'll probably never need to buy another pair in my life so what's the point?

It also causes a lot of problems. In my professional experience, I've had two ex-military managers. One was the best boss ever. But the other one was one of the worst because he had that get it DONE! attitude. While I liked him personally, I was always over-worked and under-paid (70 hour weeks were the norm) when I worked for him. Several times when I tried to take a vacation he would be calling me on the second day saying how desperate they were to get me back on the job and I always relented until the last time when I quit. Three weeks later I had a better job for 50% more pay. So it really depends on the person, not on their background.

Comment Problems with dry eyes (Score 1) 550

I had it done almost 15 years ago and I had some complications. I live in Colorado over 10,000 feet and it's very dry up here. One of the things that I haven't seen mentioned is that the surgery can cause you to have dry eyes. In most environments that's not a problem but for me, one night my eyes got so dry that my eyelid stuck to my eye and it caused me to scratch my cornea when I opened my eyes in the morning which required several more weeks of healing. Plus, I had to get one eye redone so in the end it took over a year for my eyes to completely heal. Plus I had problems with night vision from halos. Fast forward to today and I just had to get a new pair of glasses for computer work and reading. After the surgery I also had problems reading low contrast, small text. Particularly text on small molded plastic parts. If I had known all that I had to go through I probably would have waited another couple of years for the next round of technology. But I still don't need glasses for day to day living and it sure is nice to not need to wear contacts for sports. My only caution would be if you live in a very low humidity area that there can be complications from that.

From the article: A good trade to consider: welding. I recently visited Pioneer Pipe in the Utica and Marcellus shale area of Ohio and learned that last year the company paid 60 of its welders more than $150,000 and two of its welders over $200,000. The owner, Dave Archer, said he has had to turn down orders because he can't find enough skilled welders.

So in reality what you have are some welders putting in long hours in the oil fields and probably working 70 to 80 hours a week so they are getting paid lots of overtime. In the real world, that doesn't sound so good. It's no wonder Pioneer Pipe can't find people to fill positions.

I have also recently been diagnosed as a type II diabetic. While I'm sure that eventually I will easily be able to manage my diet by how I feel without an app like this, there is a learning curve and something like this could be very helpful to me at this stage. I've found some online resources that are very helpful when it comes to meal planning that could be even more useful if they could be integrated with my blood glucose meter and a smartphone. Imagine the day when there will be an implantable blood glucose meter that also monitors blood pressure and heart rate then communicates via wireless with your smartphone. Snap a picture of your meal, a barcode or menu item and it will be able to tell you how much time will need to spend on the treadmill to remain healthy.

Keep in mind that any type of install/deployment jobs that will keep you active and on your feet all day will also require a lot of travel. The problem with this is that once you start eating three meals a day in restaurants, there's no way that you wont get fat. Make time for exercise outside of work. Exercise should be a stress reliever.

Programmable Quantum Computer Created 132

An anonymous reader writes "A team at NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology) used berylium ions, lasers and electrodes to develop a quantum system that performed 160 randomly chosen routines. Other quantum systems to date have only been able to perform single, prescribed tasks. Other researchers say the system could be scaled up. 'The researchers ran each program 900 times. On average, the quantum computer operated accurately 79 percent of the time, the team reported in their paper.'"

Comment Time for a new job (Score 2, Informative) 1006

As someone who has been there and done that, my advice is to start activly looking for a new job today. It's one thing if management doesn't know what's going on but it's different if they know and don't care. In my case, I mentioned in several meetings that I needed to get legal and when my next review came around they needed someone with a different skill set. My two reviews before that were above average. The point is that if they are to cheap to get legal they are also to cheap to give you raises and support you and your job in other ways. Other places where I have worked that had no pirated software policies in place also had HR policies in place for cost of living and merit raises that were fair to the employee. Just get out of that place as fast as you can and you will be glad you did.
