The problem is what's between the islands. You need thermal lift to fly long distances in a glider, and there's precious little of that over open water. And for every successful flight of 1000+ km, there are plenty that had to be abandoned partway.
On my visits there, I remember signs prohibiting photography...not that anybody paid any attention to them.

TFA cites various other power sources as being better at offing birds, though in the best PopSci tradition it doesn't elucidate just how coal et al go about doing it. And it misses the point that just about everything we stick up in the air with reflecting surfaces is a bird killer. The birds can't discriminate between window reflections and the real scenery, and splat.
