OpenXcom 1.0 Released 50

It's a small class of video games that still draw interest or inspire an active community 20 years after their first release — even if we're now 40 years into the era of commercial video games. Games like Doom, the several iterations of Civilization, and the Mario Brothers franchise will probably be around and played in some form many decades hence. The X-COM family of games fits, too, having inspired various spiritual successors since its release in 1994. Now, an anonymous reader writes that the open source (GPL) " OpenXcom 1.0 is finally released, after 5224 commits, 1843 days, and 606 resolved issues since v0.9. 20 years of X-COMXCOM oldschool lovers enjoy!"

"Junior has permission to use this gun, but only at these times"

Are you fucking kidding me? This isn't a toy or an internet device, it is a self defense tool. I think that mandating "smart" guns is stupid, but this is even more stupid. Most people can't even program their DVR, and you want them to program a GUN?

The beautiful thing about a gun is its simplicity: simple point and click interface. Add some basic safety and legal training, and the average person is just fine without any "smarts" to foolishly rely on.

I'm glad to see that even the ACs around here see the benefit of this. I read enough of the article (really) to get a pretty good feel, and wondered if /.ers were going to trash or praise the idea. As a training tool, it is pretty useful, more practical ways than it might seem at first glance, as it is fun enough to keep people's attention when being trained.

And yes, there are some real life parallels to zombies, like the AC said, or rapidly spreading infectious disease. Interesting stuff.

I want Internet WITHOUT CAPS.. If i pay for 3Mbit or 10MBit or 25Mbit then I WANT ALL OF THAT 24/7

So you want your ISP to build out support for all of it's users to pay for the max throughput of each modem on it's network on it's back end?

Somehow I don't think you'll be able to afford that cost... nor will the grandma down the street who pays $40 for high speed internet so she can Facebook with her kids and church friends, as well as Skype with her grandkids once a week... and who ultimately subsidizes your existing internet connection.

Which is why I take my 2 year old to the family section of a local bar to watch college football on certain Saturdays in the fall because I'm not willing to pay for BTN to catch the games which aren't on ABC or ESPN.

As said by myself and others... texting remains an important thing to many a person who may be outside of your circle as well as mine.

Hell, I demand that anyone sending me a text message reimburse me the 25 cent cost for me to receive it (as I have no texting plan).
