Submission + - How We'll Program 1000 Cores - and Get Linus Ranting, Again (highscalability.com) 1

vikingpower writes: For us developers, 2015 got kick-started, mentally, by a Linus Torvald rant about parallel computing being a bunch of crock. Although Linus' rants are deservedly famous for the political incorrectness and ( often ) for their insight, it may be that Linus has overseen Gustafson's Law, which states that parallelization becomes more efficient with larger problem sizes viz. with larger data sets. Back in 2012, the High Scalability blog already ran a post pointing towards new ways to think about parallel computing, especially the ideas of David Ungar, who thinks in the direction of lock-less computing of intermediary, possibly faulty results that are updated often. At the end of this year, we may be thinking differently about parallel server-side computing than we do today.

Well, see here, that's not how democracy works. You don't get to suppress someone else's view simply because it is not in accord with your own.

So go fuck yourself

You seriously think fascist cares about democracy?

To the fascists 'democracy' is, borrowing a term coined by a very well known fascist from Turkey, a 'bus'

According to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, democracy works like a 'bus'. He hops on that bus, use the bus to get him to his destination, and then, he gets off

Fascists are all alike, no matter if they are Islamists from Turkey or Obama-cronies from the United States of America. To them, democracy is but a tool for them to attain what they want, and once they got what they want, democracy can go to hell

Submission + - Cambodian village hit by HIV mass infection (asianscientist.com)

Taco Cowboy writes: More than 100 out of the 9,000 residents of a Cambodian village have tested positive for HIV. Patients ranging from 3 to 82 years old

First detected in late November after a 74 year old man tested positive for HIV, the unusually large number of cases in the Roka Commune of Battambang province has sparked panic among the community, causing more than 800 to come forward for testing. “It has been confirmed three times by different techniques. Around 90 [people] have tested positive,” Dr. Didier Fontenille, director of the Pasteur Institute in Cambodia

According to Reuters sources, a 55-year old man by the name of Yem Chrrin has been charged with murder and practicing medicine without a license. Facing death threats, he was taken into police custody over the weekend for questioning and his own protection

The mass infections come as a blow to Cambodia which recently announced intentions to have a zero percent infection rate by 2020. Since an outbreak which swept through the country in the 1990’s, Cambodia has managed to reduce the rate of HIV infection among people aged 15 to 49 from 0.6 percent in 2013 to 0.4 percent in 2014

Submission + - CHINESE LASER ZAPS SPACE, FOR WORLD PEACE (popsci.com)

Taco Cowboy writes: A laser, using a sodium based gain medium, was fired 90 kilometers into the atmosphere from Mianyang, China. While it might look like a laser firing back at Imperial Star Destroyers, but it's actually for a peaceful purpose

The laser which was fired 90 kilometers into the atmosphere has an accuracy of within two picometers, and was used to support calibrating the International Thirty Meter Telescope, based in Mauna Kea, Hawaii

The $1 Billion International Thirty Meter Telescope observes the ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths. With adaptive optics and high altitude location, the 30 meter wide optical lens is more than 100 times as sensitive as other existing optical telescopes, and is a highlight of international cooperation, with American, Canadian, Chinese, Indian and Japanese scientists all involved in its construction and operation

The Mianyang laser's critical support role is to provide an accurate reference point in the sky during the telescope's construction. This laser is certainly an example of Chinese contributions to space science that include space x-ray telescopes and lunar rovers. However, its accuracy and power could theoretically be also applied to military purposes, such as anti-satellite and missile defense purposes

Comment Looking back ... (Score 3, Interesting) 332

Perhaps it's not the best way to predict the future, but looking back at the history of the tech industry does give us some insight of what can survive, what can't

Since I started way back in the 1970's, I've witnessed a lot of really great tech businesses that unfortunately no longer with us

Many of them either got gobbled up by others, or changed their name and/or direction one time too many that they lost their focus to survive

Some of the examples are

"Wang Computers"
"Silicon Graphics"
"DEC"
"ROLM"

Then .. we had really aimless tech companies that are still with us, in one form or another, and it is exemplified by:

"Tucows"

So, what do we learn thus far, from this very brief history lesson of the tech past?

Taco Cowboy writes: SLD (Second Line of Defense) carries a very good article on what is needed to contemplate for the 2nd Nuclear Age by Paul Bracken of Yale University

There is a growing realization that we are entering a multipolar nuclear world. Despite U.S. appeals to other countries to give up nuclear arms, this isn’t happening. And there’s little sign that it will anytime soon

New missile and other weapons in Russia and China, continued nuclear programs in Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, and Israel, and India’s nuclear triad are hard to square with the conviction that the world is marching toward some kind of global disarmament regime

India Faces Its First Major Net Neutrality Issue 61

New submitter Siddharth Srinivas writes Bharti Airtel Ltd, India's largest telecommunications carrier by subscribers, will soon start charging users extra money for using services such as Skype, as Indian operators look to boost their data network and revenues. The Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI) is no stranger to Net Neutrality, having sent a note to the ISPs in 2006 suggesting a position for Net Neutrality. TRAI had also recently rejected a proposal by Airtel and other operators the right to charge for free services such as Whatsapp. Consumers await TRAI's response to Airtel's new pricing. With no laws enforcing net neutrality in India. India's Net Neutrality discussions have just begun, with proponents rapidly trying to increase awareness.

As reported by Reuters, Korean manufacturing giant LG's Seoul headquarters have been raided over allegations that LG employees sabotaged dishwashers made by rival Samsung. The Samsung machines were "on display at two stores in September ahead of the IFA electronics show in Berlin." From the article: On Friday, investigators searched the Seoul offices of LG Elec's home appliance head, Jo Seong-jin, and others and secured documents and computer hard disks related to the IFA fair, Yonhap News Agency said.
