Comment During the previews? (Not that it matters) (Score 0) 1431

Firstly, the guy lost his s**t during the previews? Really? Not that shooting someone in the middle of a movie is more sane, but flipping out in general during the previews is silly.

That being said, I always turn off my volume AND vibrate off into the theater building and while the commercials (and eventually) previews come on I might do some quick texting of "At a movie until xPM" No actual conversations, mostly "Don't bother me for the next 2 hours" in case I was in a conversation with them earlier or they're expecting to see me later.

Or maybe just do some final quick browsing to see the run-time.

Then again, my theater is setup for dine-in viewing. So the seats are huge and you can't see what the person in front of you is doing anyway... even if their screen is bright so at most I'd annoy one of the 4 people in my grouping. Between waiters walking around and stuff the previews aren't exactly silent but once the movie starts getting closer I put my phone away. At most I'd be on for like 3 minutes during the previews while the waiter's taking my row's order.

I read TFA, and shockingly didn't know Boonsri was a woman's name. How does that take away from my overall question.

The closest thing to robot-like is that she didn't have to remember street directions. Cyborg or whatever - sure, but not robot-like.

Read my post, the question was the correct term of Robot vs any other term. I'm not seeing anywhere she describes the Glass as removing free will or where she feels less-than.

The source code? Sometimes I might glance at the syntax to see if they just put COMPLETE gibberish in there or an actual well structured statement / for-loop / etc. But I've never bothered to see if it was trying to do anything cute or even close to what it should have been, or if the loop was infinite or whatever.

For command-line stuff, I might look to see if it looks like a real command of just gibberish.

What I DO tend to do is freeze-frame newspapers and stuff where the character is reading a story out-loud relevant to the plot. I like to see if they just copy/paste the same paragraph over and over or use the cliche lorem ipsum .... text.

If he became a robot, wouldn't that mean he was kind of a slave to whatever the Glass told him to do? Like someone was texting his eyeballs messages saying "Order a quarter-pounder-with-cheese and a Dr Pepper"

If he wanted to say cyborg I'd buy it, or if he "felt" like an android I guess I could accept it.

But "robot" tends to imply a mechanical device more devoid of free-will or thought than some of the other phrases. Heck, the blurb in which it's used is describing how it's expressing personality.

I don't use headsets but I don't mind people wearing them. Maybe their job requires them to be on call or use the phone a lot. Maybe they just had it on while driving and left it in as they ran into the grocery store. Maybe they plan on having a talk with someone in a hectic place and it's easier to have two hands free in that place than holding a brick to your ear.

My dad is trying to get into the habit of wearing his at work at the warehouse because between the ambient noise and the hassle of having to read into his pocket on-the-move it's just easier to tap the thing on his ear. Being on the move constantly AND having to answer the phone just makes it easier, otherwise he just leaves it on the desk.

My only "problem" with them is if a woman has long hair covering the device then for a second I'm wondering if she's crazy or trying to talk to me.

Comment Re:Really? (Score 4, Insightful) 513

I don't agree with the bill, but there is a difference to the third-parties.

Firstly, everyone talks louder on the phone. They don't realize it and deny it left-and-right, but they do. Add to that, they will be compensating for the engine noise so it's going to be a lot of "can you hear me, what about now, is that better" So you have increased volume.

Second, you have the issue of "half a conversation" messing with your brain. Hearing another conversation isn't so bad, hearing only HALF the conversation (the guy on the phone) and your brain tries to piece together w t h they're talking about or what the person on the other-end-of-the-phone is saying. It's an automatic thing, so it adds to the annoyance.

Lastly, not too many people talk to their strangers / neighbors for more than a few minutes. Sure people talk, but for the most part people just want to veg out and rest / read / watch the movie / etc. Bring in the phones, and LOTS of people will be talking.

Personally I'm fine with the way planes have been... the talking is at a minimum so I can at least try to get some rest. Instead now you will have people going on and on about mundane stuff.

At least... hopefully the teens and younger will be Texting instead of calling... so I don't have to hear all of the "Oh My Gawd did you see what she was wearing" BS.

Better plastic guns can be built from blocks of plastic and hand tools then can be built using 3D printers. Why are they not freaking out about that. All these laws do is trip up good people exploring the capabilities of new technology. They do not address the issue of people wanting to use guns on others. We need to be addressing the issue of hate not method of gun construction.

To play Devil's Advocate...

The manual way requires a little bit of skill + knowledge + effort to make a plastic gun yourself. I'm well-educated, and even I would probably need some weeks / months to learn how to do everything the *right* way without fearing of making a mistake that will cost me a finger or an eye when it goes off.

This allows anyone that either has a 3D printer, knows someone that has a 3D printer, or knows where to steal a 3D printer... make one that's pretty reliable. And as the years go on, 3D printers will be more common. So you slip in a plastic gun past the metal detector, hide the pin and the bullet in a "pen" or something, and now a concert or high school or whatever has a danger inside.

AGAIN, just playing devil's advocate.

I imagine the major issues would be:
- Price of construction
- Price of delivering construction pieces: it's like thousands and thousands of dollars to send up 1lb of stuff into orbit
- Space junk and asteroids - something the size of an eye-glass screw could pretty much ruin the whole thing. And there's a lot of crud in orbit
- You'd need people to maintain it, run it, etc. That's a large expense right there unless they no longer use the ISS for anything except OrbitalHC employees.

They were better lit, organized better, and the shelves were maybe 1-row shorter so it didn't feel as claustrophobic in there. The layout was also a little nicer and more casual than the B&N near me. They usually had what I was looking for: tech books, books to help out in college courses, classic lit, sci-fi, fantasy, new, old. My tastes aren't that obscure.

That being said, at some point the B&N near me remodeled and looks / feels a lot nicer than it used; I actually enjoy sitting in there and flipping through some books. So I don't miss Borders much anymore.

But for a while there I preferred to do my browsing and shopping at either online at Amazon or in person at Borders.
