I like the off looking CLU. It reminded me of the special effects of the first Tron. I thought the 2nd movie missed out on what made Tron neat looking. Nothing looked like that before or since. Sort of Metropolis like. I guess that's what people have written off as cheesy, but I enjoyed the style. That's why I liked CLU. It's nice that CGI has gotten boring, but I wish they would've worked on it. Not in the Señor Spielbergo/Lucas way of going way too far to be purposely annoying.

I also wish they would've brought in William Gibson to write it and had Ridley Scott direct it. Not that there's ever a chance in hell Disney would've done that. The story sucked but it could've-should've-would've been better.

The wondergirl sucked but the large breasted spoof of her in Tron: Jeremy was funny.

It would've been more secure for employees to write them down. Then they only have to worry about their spouse, kids, plumber and people who get to see the house office. If they have a real office, it's still limited to employees and finding out who the Evil One is after something like this shouldn't be that hard. Writing down passwords on post-its isn't that big of a problem.

Testing cosmetics on animals continues because sometimes products produce detrimental actions. It's not that they sit in a lab and think, "Hey, what does this monkey look like with green lipstick" it's a "Let's test to make sure the green pigments won't cause the monkeys lips to fall off".

For what it's worth, I once worked at a primate testing place. I went in fully expecting to get annoyed at useless testing and figured I'd quit. It's nothing like that at all.

Submission + - Internet Blacklist Back in Congress (rawstory.com)

Adrian Lopez writes: A bill giving the government the power to shut down Web sites that host materials that infringe copyright is making its way quietly through the lame-duck session of Congress, raising the ire of free-speech groups and prompting a group of academics to lobby against the effort.

The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced in Congress this fall by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT). It would grant the federal government the power to block access to any Web domain that is found to host copyrighted material without permission.

Opponents note that the powers given the government under the bill are very broad. Because the bill targets domain names and not specific materials, an entire Web site can be shut down. So for example, if the US determines that there are copyright-infringing materials on YouTube, it could theoretically block access to all of YouTube, whether or not particular material being accessed infringes copyright.

I used to use the term "American" as in "From the US of A" but as I started to travel in other countries, I quickly learned that it's a confusing thing to say. American includes Canada all the way down to Argentina. North American, Central American, South American. It's not that "Canadian" isn't understood, but I've talked with people who've had problems and I've been bitched at by people when I'd use "American" to mean "from the US".

I say, "I'm from California" and sometimes "I'm from the US". I'm not a fan of USian either. The only place I had to clarify California was in India. I was there when Bush was leaving and Obama got elected. Most Indians love Bush. He let them buy nuclear power plants without signing the non-proliferation treaty.

You mean '80s and early '90s Toyotas and Mazdas where one key will open up most any lock?

Not counting older cars than that, such as MG, where one key (or a pen cap) will turn any key. Speaking of pen caps turning keys, do you remember Krytonite? They learned from their very expensive lesson that a pen cap can open up all their locks. They switched them at a huge cost and kept up their fan base.

Australian Visitors Must Declare Illegal Porn To Customs Officers Screenshot-sm 361

Australian Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor has advised visitors to take a better safe than sorry policy when it comes to their porn stashes, and declare all porn that they think might be illegal with customs officers. From the article: "The government said it changed the wording on passenger arrival cards after becoming aware of confusion among travellers about what pornography to declare. 'People have a right to privacy and while some pornography is legal and does not need to be disclosed, all travellers should be aware that certain types of pornography are illegal and must be declared to customs,' Mr O'Connor said."

UK Police Force Posts All Its Calls On Twitter Screenshot-sm 66

Stoobalou writes "One of the largest police forces in the UK is posting every incident reported to it today on Twitter. Greater Manchester Police began its 24-hour experiment this morning at 05:00 BST, tweeting all incident reports in the hope of highlighting the complexity of modern policing. 'Policing is often seen in very simple terms, with cops chasing robbers and locking them up,' Chief Constable Peter Fahy said in a statement. 'However the reality is that this accounts for only part of the work they have to deal with.'"

Dogs Can Be Pessimistic 99

Not that it will change anything, but researchers at Bristol University say that your dog might be a gloom-monger. In addition to the downer dogs, the study also found a few that seemed happy no matter how uncaring the world around them was. "We know that people's emotional states affect their judgments and that happy people are more likely to judge an ambiguous situation positively. What our study has shown is that this applies similarly to dogs," said professor Mike Mendl, an author of the study and head of animal welfare and behavior at Bristol University.
