Comment Re:Fuckin' C*nsorship (Score 1) 739

As someone pointed out, above: Dumb censors aka Automatic censorship, whether through school/business firewalls or those people who didn't opt out of their ISPs auto-censorship, etc. It's better to throw in the asterisk to reach a wider audience sometimes than to prevent a number of people from being able to load the page.

Personally, I hate the idea of automatic censorship, but it's not like I can stop it from existing.

Submission + - Bird flocks resemble liquid helium (sciencemag.org)

sciencehabit writes: A flock of starlings flies as one, a spectacular display in which each bird flits about as if in a well-choreographed dance. Everyone seems to know exactly when and where to turn. Now, for the first time, researchers have measured how that knowledge moves through the flock—a behavior that mirrors certain quantum phenomena of liquid helium. Some of the more interesting findings: Tracking data showed that the message for a flock to turn started from a handful of birds and swept through the flock at a constant speed between 20 and 40 meters per second. That means that for a group of 400 birds, it takes just a little more than a half-second for the whole flock to turn.

Submission + - Experian breach exposed 200 million Americans' personal data over a year ago

BUL2294 writes: CNN Money is reporting that, prior to the Target breach that exposed information on 110 million customers, and prior to Experian gaining Target's "identity theft protection" business from that breach, Experian was involved a serious breach, to which nobody admits the scope of. Their subsidiary, Court Ventures, unwittingly sold access to a database to a Vietnamese fraudster named Hieu Minh Ngo. This database contained information on some 200 million Americans, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, birthdays, work history, driver's license numbers, email addresses, and banking information. "Criminals tapped that database 3.1 million times, investigators said. Surprised you haven't heard this? It's because Experian is staying quiet about it. It's been more than a year since Experian was notified of the leak. Yet the company still won't say how many Americans were affected. CNNMoney asked Experian to detail the scope of the breach. The company refused. "As we've said consistently, it is an unfortunate and isolated issue," Experian spokesman Gerry Tschopp said."

Submission + - Two South African Cancer Patients Receive 3D Printed Titanium Jaw Implants (3dprint.com)

jigmypig writes: Two patients in South Africa that have had their lives and more specifically their jaws severely affected by cancer, have just received 3D printed jaw implants. The jaws were 3D printed using a laser sintering process that melts powdered titanium, one layer at a time. The process saves a ton of money, and unlike traditional manufacturing of titanium jaws, it doesn't waste any materials. Traditional manufacturing wastes up to 80% of the titanium block used in the process, whereas with 3D printing there is little to no waste at all. This new process also allows for a fully customizable solution. The models are drawn up in CAD software, and then printed out to precisely fit the patient to a tee.

Comment If it's not necessary, then don't do it! (Score 1) 550

If it's not necessary, then don't do it! Any time a bodily tissue or organ that undergoes any type of surgery, it will never be the same again. 20 years ago a friend in FL underwent Lasik surgery. She acquired an infection in one eye and treated her with antibiotics without success. When the doctors realized she had a fungal infection inside the eye, it was too late to save her vision. In April 2013, I experienced 4 retinal detachments at the age of 45 in the left eye requiring 3 surgeries: laser surgery; vitrectomy and laser surgery; vitrectomy and laser surgery with scleral buckle. In October 2013 I went against medical advice and had the scleral buckle removed because I couldn't tolerate the device in my eye. In April 2014, I had cataract surgery because the previous surgeries were so traumatic to the eye, causing a cataract. Over $60,000 later I now have about 90% vision in the left eye. Cause of the retinal detachment: normal aging with bad luck. Don't have elective surgery on your body if it's not medically necessary, you might regret it later.

Meh.

It's visually appalling crap.

Deference and Clarity lose all the time over the Visual Context that is gained by clearly defined controls with moderate depth, shadow and lighting.

And their color scheme of garish and overly luminous colors that clash with each other? Just how is this a good thing? It isn't.

I have them. Email me at zav - at - mac - dot - com

I LOVE 10.6.8. I use it on all my home macs.

In the office, I have to use 10.8.5. It's the least visually sucky of them post Snow Leopard.

Install an SSD and Max out your RAM and stick with 10.6.8 or leave the platform like I will be doing.

Sucks that Ive's touch is destroying the Mac and iOS interface. Really sucks, but these new versions are too ugly to use.
