Did it, though?

I'd love to actually get some interesting comments about McAfee, his pathology (sociopath) for example, when opening these Slashdot threads. But nope, it's just more "anti-virus" jokes. Every single thread. Jokes repeated ad nauseam.

Nokia Selling Its Headquarters To Raise Funds 186

PolygamousRanchKid writes with news the Nokia is looking to generate some cash by selling its headquarters and leasing it back from the new owner. The sale price for the 48,000 sq. meter building is €170 million. "The struggling mobile phone company has operated in the glass and steel building in Espoo near Helsinki, known as Nokia House, since 1997. The sale is another step towards reducing costs and concentrating on its core business. Nokia has spent almost a third of its cash reserves in 12 months, and in October had about €3.6bn left in the bank to turn itself into a smartphone manufacturer capable of competing with Apple and Samsung."

I agree with everything you've said here.

My problem is, what's the foundation of any desktop operating system? The UI.

Windows 8, on a desktop, stinks. Metro is horrible on a desktop. The fullscreen "start menu" is horrible and useless as a standard launcher. Things like the network menu give me hives. The difficulty in getting out of the metro interface? Why can't I turn that shit off? Why is the default music player a metro app? Did no one suggest to them that maybe it'd be a good idea to have "metro mode" instead of kludging the two together? Separate file associations for when I'm in desktop mode & metro mode. Now that would work well.

I know, if you're not using the keyboard to find&launch apps you're an idiot, but my dad doesn't use the keyboard, and likely never will as he's prone to forgetting what the app he wants is called, it's just not relevant to him. I would recommend someone learn the OSX interface than learn the Windows 8 interface (although I wouldn't want to support either).

All the technical brilliance of Windows 8 doesn't matter, I didn't wonder where those features were in Windows 7 and I'm not going out of my way to expose them in Windows 8. It's the UI that matters.

Thing is, once the drivers are working fine you'll have to deal with the horrible multiple monitor support on most applications with fullscreen support. Remmina being a perfect example of something I've struggled with recently.

It's the little things that you notice when running a linux desktop. Multiple monitor fullscreen support, PPTP vpn client constantly disconnecting (when it doesn't on the OSX client sitting right next to it and the Android phone in the pocket)

Then compound those little difficulties you have with the fact you're going to have to make the decision between a sparse DE (lxde, xfce, the many boxes), a wannabe touch DE (Unity, Gnome-shell) or the cluttered mess that is KDE. I still have love and hope for Cinnamon, and hope with the newer version it will be less buggy.

Linux on the desktop frustrates me. Linux on the laptop infuriates me. As Apple cease to be an option for me on the laptop with the latest reductions in features, and Windows 8 being the most frustrating iteration of Windows I've ever dealt with, I'm starting to wonder what my ideal replacement is going to be? I really don't want to run Mint in a VM on top of Windows, but that just might be what I'm going to have to do.

The state of computers is terrible right now.

Anyone who uses the Dock as an application switcher is an idiot. As is anyone that uses the taskbar in Windows.

Application switching should be done with the keyboard. Cmd+Tab, ~+Tab, Alt+Tab. For even faster results, [cmd/alt]+tab & mouse click.

I think your developer is an idiot.

Airlines Face Acute Pilot Shortage 421

Hugh Pickens writes "The WSJ reports that U.S. airlines are facing their most serious pilot shortage since the 1960s. Federal mandates are taking effect that will require all newly hired pilots to have at least 1,500 hours of prior flight experience — six times the current minimum. This raises the cost and time to train new fliers in an era when pay cuts and more-demanding schedules already have made the profession less attractive. Meanwhile, thousands of senior pilots at major airlines soon will start hitting the mandatory retirement age of 65. 'We are about four years from a solution, but we are only about six months away from a problem,' says Bob Reding, recently retired executive vice president of operations at AMR Corp. A study by the University of North Dakota's aviation department indicates major airlines will need to hire 60,000 pilots by 2025 to replace departures and cover expansion over the next eight years. Meanwhile, only 36,000 pilots have passed the Air Transport Pilot exam in the past eight years, which all pilots would have to pass under the Congressionally imposed rules, and there are limits to the ability of airlines, especially the regional carriers, to attract more pilots by raising wages. While the industry's health has improved in recent years, many carriers still operate on thin profit margins, with the airlines sandwiched between rising costs for fuel and unsteady demand from price-sensitive consumers. 'It certainly will result in challenges to maintain quality,' says John Marshall, an independent aviation-safety consultant who spent 26 years in the Air Force before overseeing Delta's safety. 'Regional carriers will be creative and have to take shortcuts' to fill their cockpits."
