Comment Why gravity is treated as a force? (Score 1) 97

Why do physicists insist on treating gravity as a force? Since Einstein, we know gravity is the curvature of space-time. It may be represented as a force in calculations but in reality there is no force.

If gravity is not a force then do we really have a hierarchy problem? For eg. shouldn't Newton's constant, G, be some kind of average curvature of space-time between two bodies and be calculable from this curvature?

Obviously, if this is the case, G has nothing to do with Fermi's constant and we should not compare the two.

Submission + - Slashdot BETA Discussion (slashdot.org) 60

mugnyte writes: With Slashdot's recent restyled "BETA" slowly rolled to most users, there's been a lot of griping about the changes. This is nothing new, as past style changes have had similar effects. However, this pass there are significant usability changes: A narrower read pane, limited moderation filtering, and several color/size/font adjustments. BETA implies not yet complete, so taking that cue — please list your specific, detailed opinoins, one per comment, and let's use the best part of slashdot (the moderation system) to raise the attention to these. Change can be jarring, but let's focus on the true usability differences with the new style.

Submission + - Slashdot forces a beta site by default

kelk1 writes: As a poor submitter found out (https://developers.slashdot.org/story/14/02/05/2328224/html5-app-for-panasonic-tvs-rejected---jquery-is-a-hack), Slashdot (https://slashdot.org) suddenly forced a preview of its beta site without any warning on all its viewers.

Judging by the comments, the feedback was immediate and clearly negative.

I cannot speak for the forum moderation side, but my reaction to the front page was an knee jerk: "Oh no!, not another portal full of noise I cannot speed-read through." Text and hyperlinks are what we need, please, and as little graphics as possible. Think lynx, thank you.

Submission + - Kim Jong Un, Ghost of Hitler, Announce Approval of Slashdot Beta

An anonymous reader writes: The Supreme Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the ghost of the former leader of National Socialist German Workers' Party have approved of the new Slashdot Beta site in a rare instance of agreement amongst the two. The two strong personalities have a history strong disagreement of the most mundane of things but united today outside the Great Pyongyang Unicorn Lair with Slashdot Editor Samzenpus to show support. "Morale at Dice [Slashdot's parent company] is at an all time low, but the show of support from such great world leaders is an encouragement to the entire team", said Samzenpus.

I haven't tried this with the latest version by even a version 4.x GCC cannot generate inline code with the 8 bytes version of cmpxchg with 32bit code. Doing this in a function is OK.

I think the problem is that this instruction almost takes up all of the registers and GCC cannot cope with this if you want to do it inline.

cmpxchg8b is useful for lock-free code.

There was a short story about this (I can't remember the title). The story was about travelling back to Jesus's time to verify Jesus's existence but the travelers found themselves in space as Earth was elsewhere.

They had to travel ~220 million years back since that's the time the Solar system takes a turn around the galaxy's core and the Earth position would be the same when they started their travel.

Comment Time travel is impossible (Score 1, Interesting) 465

because time is imaginary. It does not exist.

Why physicists insist using Einstein's equations as a 'proof' of time travel is beyond me. It is the same as if one used Newton's equations for speeds faster than 0.6 c.

In both cases the results are bogus as these equations were obviously not designed to handle these extreme cases.

Do not forget that these equations try to describe reality and they do this with very great precision, but it does not mean reality itself 'runs' these equations.

Comment Time is just an illusion (Score 0) 530

I firmly believe that time does not exist. It is just a creation of the human mind as we are aware of the past, the present and the future.

Yeah, I know about "time" slows down in a strong gravitational field or if you approach to the speed of light. But "time" slows down for you (which you do not notice of course) because the particles in your body do not have "time" to interact with each other. I mean, they are busy going into a particular direction and cannot go into another one as the resulting speed vector would be greater than c.

If there is no interaction between particles then there is no change in their states and the result will be as if "time" stands still.

The problem is, as you can notice in my explanation, that such words like "change" and "speed" implicate time. But that does not mean time is a real physical dimension. Reality does not execute our equations in order to work.
