Interesting. Thanks. But the entire fleet was not down, only several dozen. The ipads "powered down unexpectedly", not the type of behavior you expect from changes to a document data change, but a very common problem when an app or OS has been updated or changed in some manner.
You're right, it was just dozens - I misremembered the article. But they all appeared to be at the same time. You can't do auto update on the OS itself, though an app update could happen automatically. But supposedly they could not get the iPads to work at all without reconnecting to the airport WiFi network. That doesn't make much sense for any kind of update.
The fix mentioned in the article was deleting and reinstalling the app, so that's probably got to do with it. It's a big app?
Honestly, the Apple-ness of this is completely irrelevant, and you know damned well it is.
Actually it's entirely relevant.
An application took down the entire OS. This is exactly the thing we derided Microsoft for allowing for so long. I've been working with Android, including some very dodgy hacked versions for my Motorola Milestone and I've never had an application crash the OS. Sure applications have crashed but that would be back to the home screen (androids version of a crash to desktop) but never had it take down the entire OS. Even in modern Windows it's very hard for an application to cause the OS to reboot.
So first off, it demonstrates the application was not properly sandboxed by the OS.
Secondly, I thought this was exactly the kind of thing Apple's "well curated" walled garden is meant to prevent.
So not only is it difficult for the same thing to happen on Windows, Linux or Android, but Apple is supposed to have extra protection against this kind of thing.
Get back on your meds please.
"No flights were canceled, and pilots have been notified how to fix the bug, by deleting the app and re-installing it. Apple said it had confirmed that the iPads’ own hardware and operating system did not crash, and that the issue was with the Jeppesen app."
No. We are talking about a well understood industry standard document format. The idea that 100 million dollar planes could be grounded over not being able to open PDF documents is simply appalling regardless of what kind of excuses you want to make for it.
If it wasn't Apple code that was directly responsible here it certainly seems that their approach to design was at the heart of all of this.
An overflowing toilet can keep a 100 million dollar plane on the ground, so I'm sure a computer can.
Most posts here I see are talking about the merits of native title, what it means to be able to claim native title, and who is the native in the first place (Native Title is what land ownership is called in some countries). But really the core point is written write in the summary:
The vote, which reverses a 2009 decision to endorse the project
They endorsed the project and now have withdrawn their support after construction has started. Talk about screwing over a major project. Is there any recourse the project has to prevent them from pulling shit like that again? In commercial terms a breach of contract like this would result in an incredible payout to the affected parties.
The company I work for has been through some similar crap before. One of our projects was delayed by 3 years due to someone claiming native title on the land where it was supposed to go ahead. The kicker... it was reclaimed land that was built in the 60s. Somehow I don't think a 300 year old aboriginal tribe had a campsite in the middle of the ocean. The courts agreed but it still presented a huge cost to fight the legal battle and a 3 year delay in the project.
People who pull stunts like this should have their right to making such claims revoked or should have to pay compensation to the projects they screw over.
If it ever happened on a plane, then it means that the maintenance was intentionally skipped. If they reach 248 days of continuous operation then a number of significant maintenance cycles have been skipped (some 23-25 inspection / maintenance cycles that generally require shutting down the electrical system). The generators in question are attached to the engines. The engines have a overhaul schedule that is shorter than 248 days of continuous operation. If they managed to reach this point, then the major maintenance cycles have been skipped and the engines are long overdue for a tear down inspection and overhaul. Any plane which could reach this point, 248 days of continuous operation missing all of the required maintenance; this is not a plane (or an airline for that matter) which anyone should be flying on.
Are you trying to say that to get to this point required maintenance would need to be skipped?
but we live in different times, with lots of girls attending CS classes
We do live in different times. Specifically there are now far less girls attending CS classes than there used to be. The gender gap is a fairly modern creation of the late 90s.
systemd actually DOES provide faster boot times
Quantify that. Faster than what? Faster than Upstart? If so why?
Systemd is not the only parallel booting system out there. Though given it's excellent tools for analysing the boot process I have no doubt that systemd could be fine tuned to be fastest. But out of the box there's nothing intrinsically magic about it.
Feminists do criticise the kind of advert you describe. As someone who wants more men's liberation I criticise it too. Just because it didn't reach your ears or every single article about some other issue doesn't mention it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, as Google will confirm for you.
It's true that we need more men's liberation. Like women threw off the old ideas of what the ideal woman was in the 60s, men need to do the same today. Forget all that macho crap about not backing down, not showing emotion or weakness, having to take care of women to feel valued. Don't blame women or get upset because they seem to have freed themselves and you haven't. They are showing you the way to liberation, embrace it.
It's not a competition to see who has it worst overall. It's about fixing specific problems for both genders. Don't try to turn it into a gender war, that doesn't help anyone.
