Rapidshare Divulges Uploader Information 281

Gorgonzolanoid notes a post on TorrentFreak reporting that the German Rapidshare is divulging uploader information to rights holders. Record labels are apparently making creative use of "paragraph 101" of German copyright law, which gives them a streamlined process to ask a court to order disclosure of information such as an IP address. "In Germany, the file-hosting service Rapidshare has handed over the personal details of alleged copyright infringers to several major record labels. The information is used to pursue legal action against the Rapidshare users and at least one alleged uploader saw his house raided."

Edge Online has an in-depth look at the beginnings of the first PlayStation console. It starts at Sony's partnership with Nintendo, the purpose of which was to integrate a CD-ROM drive into the SNES. A falling out between the companies led Sony to stubbornly pursue a market dominated by Nintendo and Sega. The console's technology and Sony's unusual position in the industry quickly attracted the interest of many developers and publishers, eventually leading to sales that emphatically won that round of the console wars. "'There was a huge resistance inside the company to actually being in the videogames business at all,' explains Harrison. 'The main reason why the Sony brand wasn't really used in the early marketing of PlayStation was not necessarily out of choice, but it was because Sony's old guard was scared that it was going to destroy this wonderful, venerable, 50-year old brand. They saw Nintendo and Sega as toys, so why on Earth would they join the toy business? That changed a bit after we delivered 90 per cent of the company's profit for a few years.'"

Submission + - NSA Director to Head New Pentagon Cyber Command (wsj.com)

visible.frylock writes: According to the WSJ, Defense Secretary Gates plans to nominate Lieutenant General Keith Alexander to head the new Pentagon Cybersecurity Command (previously reported on by the Washington Post). While the Post says that "The Pentagon plans do not involve the Department of Homeland Security, which has responsibility for securing the government's non-military computer domain," the Journal reports that Lieutenant General Alexander has mentioned of working with DHS:

"We need to dispel the rumors," he said, adding that NSA didn't want to run all the government's cybersecurity operations but would help Homeland Security secure government civilian networks.

Gen. Alexander also catalogued a few of the "things that are broken" in the government's efforts to protect its networks. The government can't monitor intrusions on its networks in a timely manner. It detects compromises of private-sector networks but sometimes can't disclose the problem because its information is classified.

The Pentagon recently said that Secretary Gates wants to increase the number of security experts trained by DoD from 80 to 250 annually.

Music Copyright In EU Extended To 70 Years 395

rastos1 writes "The European Parliament extended the copyright in the EU for the performers of musical works from 50 to 70 years. The legislation will be reviewed in 3 years. The European Commission will consider extending the scope to audiovisual works too." So performers will collect for 20 more years from the date of performance; composers' rights already extend to 70 years beyond their deaths. Update: 4/26 at 12:15 GMT by SS: Reader rimberg points out that while the copyright extension was passed in the European Parliament, it is now being held up in the Council of Ministers awaiting further debate on the issue.

Hmm. Well, I work as a fleet manager for a large trucking company. I work 12-18 hours a day, 5 days a week. I'm on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and am on salary, so no overtime pay.

Trucking's a wonderful place to be. I honestly love my job, just hate the hours, especially because they're overnight.
