Christmas Cheer

Journal Journal: Three-year-olds are happy with any christmas present 1

My 3-year-old twin nieces were visiting me today with my sister. They borrowed some cartoon DVDs, like "We love Mickey Mouse." I showed my sister how to play it on a PS2, because she was not sure if could use it.

Since Christmas is nearing, I asked the nieces what they had asked Santa to bring them. The first answer was "presents." When I asked if there was anything specific they wanted, the answer was "Mickey Mouse."

That's when I decided just to ask their parents what toys are absolutely forbidden (Nooo, not another plushie!) and buy something based on that.

Journal Journal: Voting in Finland

After reading about the problems with the election in the USA again, I wanted to tell you how voting works in Finland and what the ballots look like.

There are some images of the ballot, and the voting procedure here, but the text is in Finnish. Also, I found one photo here

Basicly, the procedure is this: 1) You prove your identity, get the ballot and get marked as having voted. 2) You go to the polling booth, write the number of your candidate (and nothing else!) inside the circle on the ballot and re-fold the ballot. 3) Go get your ballot stamped and drop it inside the ballot box.

If you are unable to cast your vote yourself, you can get a helper in the booth with you. You can either have your own helper, or you can use the official election helper present at the location. The helper you choose must not be a candidate in the election.

The numbers of all the candidates are on a poster in the polling booth. No canditate has the number "1", the first number is "2."

Well, now that I have already written that text, I noticed that there are English instructions on the site as well. Follow the links on that page for more info, if you're interested.

I'm still not going to delete the text now that I have written it, damn it.

Science

Journal Journal: Best research ever

Finnish Meteorological Institute finished a research recently that concluded that to have as many beautiful summer days during your vacation, you should have it between the beginning of June and the middle of August.

So basicly, if you want to have beautiful summer days during your vacation, you should have it in the summer.

Journal Journal: Second week as a construction worker. 2

I haven't been able to find any work in the IT industry, but I managed to get a summer job at a construction company. So I've been doing that for two weeks now. I'm young and I need the money. It's been pretty hard work, but I consider it as a chance to work out and get a little sun.

Probably the biggest suprise was that there has been little talk about women (and no racist jokes, but then again, two of the guys are Bosnian), but today it began. And once it began, it was just as bad, if not worse, than it was when I was in the army. There were three other guys there with me, two in their mid-thirties and one 21-year-old, but they talked like they were all 17. Pussy this and twat that. If half of what they are saying is true, they are going to fuck like rabbits non-stop from the moment they are home until 6.30 Monday morning.

Journal Journal: I'm an asshole today (or: the most fun I've had programming)

You might have been to my Agapio racing team dubbing page. Most of the examples there are from Digimon. Perhaps because of this, my Finnish guestbook has been taken over by kids who argue which is better: Pokemon or Digimon.

Why would they discuss in some random guy's guestbook and not in some dedicated forum? I don't know. I don't want to remove the guestbook, and I rarely remove any messages. I have left several goatse-class messages in the book, but I removed one spam and some bad troll efforts left by my friends.

So today, I made some filters that switch the strings poke and digi when displaying the page. So pokemon becomes digimon and vice versa. The filter also switch several character names and poke/digi monster names. So now I'm just waiting for the confused "digimon sux, no wait, I meant digimon"-messages.

Journal Journal: IP ban - lifted 2

Due to excessive bad posting from this IP or Subnet, comment posting has temporarily been disabled. If it's you, consider this a chance to sit in the timeout corner . If it's someone else, this is a chance to hunt them down.

Come on, it's been a week already. And besides, I can still post, just as long as I ssh to a remote box and post from there...

Edit:Yes, the ban has been lifted. It lasted just about a week.

Journal Journal: I am the king of goatse

I don't know if I should be proud (but I am), but I was looking at the http-refereres on my homepage and noticed someone had gotten to my guestbook using these two searches:

Google:goatse.cx hello.jpg fourth result.
Yahoo: goatse.cx hello.jpg SECOND result.

Both results point to my English guestbook. The first result in both searches is the same messageboard. If I'm not the king of goatse, I'm at least the second in command.

Oh yeah, and if someone misses Bob, go see the goatse gallery.

Update: I've been "promoted" to 2nd place on Google as well...

Programming

Journal Journal: Felt like going postal today 1

Don't you just love it when you're struggling with a bug in your code and all your co-workers decide to be cute and come and ask you "So, does it do anything yet?" every five minutes?

Oh yeah, and when I say "Please leave" (twice), that should be the first warning sign that I'm not in the mood. So if you come back moments later and I say "Get the fuck away from me", you shouldn't be suprised.

And by the way, the bug was really stupid, like it almost always is.

Journal Journal: Need to look busy? (e.g. to have an excuse to read Slashdot)

There was a Discussion on Slashdot on how to fake a hard day at the office. I remember people suggesting on the Linux side to continuously dump the system log on screen and other such stuff.

Well, I was really bored and made something similar. It's made with Java, so it should work on non-Windows OSses, but it looks much more convincing on Windows. I think it requires JRE 1.4.2 to work, but it might work on earlier JREs as well...

The jar-file is here. Two screenshots are here: 1 and 2

Its appearance is pretty non-configurable at the moment (unless you change the image and text-files inside the jar), but I'm planning on making it more flexible when I'm bored again...

Journal Journal: Metamoderation guidelines

First, search for "SCO". If you find it, and the comment is moderated funny, metamoderate it unfunny. If it has some other positive mod, read the comment. It it truly is a good post and not just "OMG SCO IS TEH SUGZ", metamoderate the moderation as fair.

Then metamoderate the rest of the moderations:

  • If the moderation is positive, metamoderate it as fair/funny.
  • If the moderation is negative and it is not an obvious crapflood (First post/ASCII-goatse/GNAA/Gay porn etc.), metamoderate the moderation as unfair.

That's it. This way metamoderation will normally take under one minute of your time depending of course on the number of SCO posts.

Journal Journal: "Virii" is not a word 4

"Virii" is not a word. Well, it is a word, just like "sokblast" is a word, but just like "sokblast", "virii" doesn't mean anything.
