While it is my preferred desktop OS, it leaves a lot to be desired as a server.
notwithstanding vendor incompatiblities, the "one throat to chock" position is often held by organizations that lack technical competency, at least in a lot of my experience.

This suggests you need better inter-personal skills. Try joining a speaking group like toastmasters, or find local social groups in your area. Not only is it good networking, but you may pickup how non-technical people perceive you.
It was a solution to two separate problems:
Secure the communication and ensure the identity.
