Robots Must Be Designed To Be Compassionate, Says SoftBank CEO 112

An anonymous reader writes: At the SoftBank World conference in Tokyo, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has made a case for robots to be developed so as to form empathic and emotional relationships with people. "I'm sure that most people would rather have the warm-hearted person as a friendSomeday robots will be more intelligent than human beings, and [such robots] must also be pure, nice, and compassionate toward people," SoftBank's Aldebaran tech group will make its empathic "Pepper" robot available for companies to rent in Japan from October at a rate of $442 per month.
GNU is Not Unix

Video Purism Offers Free (as in Freedom) Laptops (Video) 77

Purism uses its own OS, PureOS, which is a Debian derivative by way of Ubuntu and other members of the Debian-derivative family, but with no taint of proprietary code. Now imagine all the binaries stripped out of the Linux kernel, making it closer to the FSF ideal of a 100% free operating system than the Linux kernel in use almost everywhere else.

They're still using a proprietary BIOS, but have people working on a Free one. The main thing, though, is that Purism is working to give you all the privacy and freedom they can -- with more coming as they keep working to replace proprietary bits of the OS, BIOS, and hardware drivers with Free Software. Best of all, even if you don't need a new laptop right now, you can download PureOS and run it on any compatible hardware you already own.

I wondered that myself. There would be great value if the bacteria could be engineered to maintain a limited population so the host would get a baseline supply of insulin. They would probably still require injections to keep well regulated, but it would be less and with reduced consequences if they were unable to do that for a time.

Perhaps it could even be enough to let a type I diabetic manage their blood sugar more like a type II sufferer.

I still get a wee bit finicky about the word "MODEM" being thrown about. The is no cable modem nor DSL modem. In both cases the signal remains digital. MODEM is MOdulation and DEModulation. Whilst trivial it still irks me a little tiny bit but not enough to actually comment on it most of the time. That and, well, the options are a bit clunky to type or to say. Still, I prefer to use the word router, I suppose.

Art class was so very very long ago, likely before you were a mote in your father's eye, actually. I never took any of the arts classes in college - I did take creative writing and music classes which served to fill my prerequisites. Anyhow, I may be wrong. Isn't black the presence of all colors and white the absence of any color?

I could see using the RGB to create black but how does one manage to get a true white? It seems (I did not even do more than skim the summary) that there would need to be some filtering involved or multiple lasers.

Samsung Finds, Fixes Bug In Linux Trim Code 184

New submitter Mokki writes: After many complaints that Samsung SSDs corrupted data when used with Linux, Samsung found out that the bug was in the Linux kernel and submitted a patch to fix it. It turns out that kernels without the final fix can corrupt data if the system is using linux md raid with raid0 or raid10 and issues trim/discard commands (either fstrim or by the filesystem itself). The vendor of the drive did not matter and the previous blacklisting of Samsung drives for broken queued trim support can be most likely lifted after further tests. According to this post the bug has been around for a long time.
