Comment Re:Maybe they need a union (Score 4, Insightful) 511

Are you kidding, a significant portion of those people are under the delusion that if they work their ass off now, they will be start-up billionaires by the time they're 30. And guess what, there are plenty of companies that are more than happy to indulge their fantasy. Only, after five-to-ten years of that crap do they start to realize that except for a very small few, it is a pipe dream. Of course, by that time they are considered too old for the industry and are replaced by another delusional young go-getter and the cycle repeats. They don't want a unions or regulations, or anything that might jeopardize their chance at being the next software / web billionaire. The ironic thing is that while this is one of the most liberal areas in the country, the entire place is like an Ayn Rand dystopia.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.

I wouldn't call Amazon a "New Player" in the phone market. The Kindle Fire is still an Android tablet and has been selling like hot cakes. They also have had 4G connectivity for a few years. The Kindle phone is just a smaller version of their tablet that can make phone calls. Other than the smaller form factor and phone app, nearly everything else is the same.

Comment Re:But scarcity! (Score 2) 390

Trying to get government to run networks would work well up front, but in 5 years it would be outdated and there would be no money to upgrade it.

What is the difference between that and what we have now? It isn't like Comcast is working around the clock to beef up their last-mile connections.

I feel the same way about internet service that I feel about Healthcare: I am all for private for-profit alternatives, but there needs to be a solid free or low-cost (non-profit) public option. Everybody should have a minimum standard with the option to go with a private entity if they want something better. Something needs to shake up the Internet monopolies and overthrow their comfy fiefdoms.

You mean you never heard the old Viking tales of how Thor and Kaptein Amerika fought to control the rampaging monster known as the GrÃnn Raseri Mann all for the affections of the goddess Freyja? I remember there being a Shieldmaiden, Sort Enke. I believe it has something to do with how Vikings got their shields. It was all apart of the ancient Agenter Skjold saga.

Don't you know that there is no cure for CANCER!? Drop everything and find a cure for it. We must start teaching everyone everything we know about cancer starting in elementary school so that we can eliminate this problem fast. What do you mean you have no interest in medicine or medical research? If you're not with us, than you're against us. We as a society can and must only focus on one problem at a time.

I don't know, I like the idea of only having a 30 minute drive to Home Depot, pick it up and be playing with it that day vs ordering it online (even if it is slightly cheaper) and waiting a week or two for it to get here.

I always try to buy local for big-ticket items, especially when it comes to having to return it. Plus, I've seen enough videos of UPS / Fedex people drop-kicking and otherwise abusing packages to not want to rely on them for the real fragile and expensive stuff.

Well, if the time travel documentary, "Back To The Future 2" is correct, Jaws 19 will be coming out next year. So, we should be getting about a dozen sequels in the next few months.

Totally stoked for hoverboards, flying DeLoreans, and Home fusion reactors to be invented and appear on the market within the next couple of months as well!

Comment Re:Bring back Usenet! (Score 1) 142

I would love to have more modern version of Usenet. A simple news and commenting protocol that can be implemented in a web browser or a dedicated client alike. Something that is ubiquitous as RSS feeds. I have a client that aggregates all the latest articles from my favorite sites and and then can go in and browse comments in a tree like structure. I would have the ability to mark individual stories and even sub-threads to follow or know what comments I have read or have yet to read. Hell, I doubt that something like that would really be that hard to hack into RSS or design from scratch in XML.

Personally, I miss the early days of the internet where everything had a tool, and there was a tool for everything. There were programs and protocols galore: HTTP, Gopher, Usenet, Email, FTP, IRC, Archie / Veronica, Telnet for BBSes. Most of them are dead or so niche to be included only for "legacy compatibility". Now there is just HTTP to rule them all and shit is boring.
