You left out the important word "constitutional".

Canada is a constitutional monarchy that holds it's own parliament and elects its own leaders. The main power of Canada is in the Parliament of Canada. Not even the Prime Minister can rule by fiat. everything they do needs to pass through parliament, not sure about Canada but Australia has dismissed Prime Ministers before for trying to force their acts through. The Queen's representative in our respective nations, the Governor General (GG) does not hold any real power besides the power to dissolve parliament which can only be done under specific circumstances (such as a constitutional crisis, but more commonly because the ruling party has called an election and the first step is asking the GG to dissolve parliament). If Parliament is dissolved, the government goes into caretaker mode while we (as in "the people") go to the polls.

The first line from your link is:

"The monarchy of Canada is the core of both Canada's federalism and its Westminster-style parliamentary democracy,"

England has not been an absolute monarchy since the 1600's. Your information is wrong in so many ways.

Sure they have a right to self governance, but with the country being so split, it's hard to make such a case.

The Scots are not ruled from Westminster, since 1997 they've had their own elected parliament making their own laws in Scotland apart from a few reserved laws. Even before then they weren't ruled from England, they were part of the union and got an equal say (as in a vote per person) same with the Welsh and Northern Ireland.

The Scots already have self governance, the vote is about leaving the union which is mainly an economic and military co-operation. The Union Flag is a combination of the Scottish flag (St Andrew's Cross, white diagonal lines), Irish flag (St Patrick's Cross, red diagonal lines) and the English flag (St George's Cross, red cross).

In this case, they'd be right.

They were targeted by a government that is extremely unpopular at the moment to serve as a distraction from the other problems Australia has like increasing unemployment and a worsening economy (all the things that the previous Labor govt kept ticking along). This couldn't look more staged if Joe Hockey came out and said, "we staged this". Unfortunately there is a large wave of xenophobia in Australia and the xenophobes and racists are the LNP's (Liberal/National Party) most core audience, Abbott is trying to capitalise on this to try and improve on his woeful disapproval.

No evidence was actually presented to the media (the government doesn't need to) and the desired affect is to sow more xenophobia and distract the people. They can expect a show trial at best but more likely they'll be released without charge (and the media will ignore this).

It's not the first time this government has used this kind of misdirection, Abbott declared a "terror emergency" on the same day that thousands of students protested against uni fee hikes and HECS reductions to prevent papers from reporting on the student protests.
