Submission + - routertech.org have released v2.9! (routertech.org)

thriemus writes: Head over to routertech.org and have a look at their new version of custom router firmware v2.9. I only recently discovered this project and having successfully upgraded my router I can say it works well allowing you to run multiple commands including cron jobs! They have an online demo of an older v2.6 however having upgraded my router to current 2.9 I can tell you that it is basically the same as the v2.9 web interface. They also provide a nice Router Upgrade Checker and a list of compatible routers. My router was not listed however the upgrade ran perfectly after working through the firmware upgrade instructions they provide. Nice fun project to try at home! Please be aware that this has the potential to brick your router and should not be undertaken lightly, however they do provide some support and tools to help you try and recover your router should the need arise. Full source code is provided and the project firmware is released under GPL.

Submission + - Is Oracle getting ready to kill OpenSolaris? (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: "People outside of IT seldom think of Oracle as a Linux company, but it is, writes Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols. Not only does Oracle encourage its customers to use its own house-brand clone of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), Oracle Unbreakable Linux, Oracle has long used Linux internally both on its servers and on some of its desktops. So, what does a Linux company like Oracle wants to do with its newly purchased Sun's open-source operating system, OpenSolaris? The answer appears to be: "Nothing." Ellison, Oracle's God-king CEO, may have talked Solaris up when he announced the Oracle/Sun deal, but look closer at his proclamation and everything else Oracle has been saying since then. It's the already deployed Solaris distributions, not its open-source twin, OpenSolaris, that gets the praise. OpenSolaris isn't even an after-thought."

Submission + - Microsoft admits new ActiveX zero-day bug (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: "For the second time in a week, Microsoft is warning users that hackers are exploiting an unpatched, critical bug in a company-made ActiveX control, putting people running Internet Explorer (IE) at risk. The company has been busy lately acknowledging 'zero-day' vulnerabilities. Today's admission was the third in the last two months, and the fifth since February. According to the security advisory Microsoft released early Monday, the vulnerability is in Office Web Components, a set of ActiveX controls for publishing Office content to the Web, and for displaying that content in IE. The bug is in the ActiveX control that displays Excel spreadsheets within IE, Microsoft said."

Submission + - Sleek Solar and Wind Powered Hybrid Street Lamps (inhabitat.com)

Mike writes: "Why choose between solar power and wind turbines when you can have both? That's the approach behind a recently unveiled hybrid wind/solar street lamp, which is completely powered by a 300W wind turbine and an 80W set of solar panels. These stylish street lamps are capable of operating completely off grid and can be easily scaled to accommodate a wide range of components (LED lights, solar panels, wind turbine, tower height, and battery storage) to suit various projects. Designer and manufacturer Urban Green Energy has announced that they just signed an agreement with an undisclosed city in China to outfit their streets with these new hybrid lamps."

I suspect we will gain our understanding through modelling but I'm not sure I'll be around when we do.

I agree. I've always thought that one of Edelman's conscious artifacts, http://www.21stcentury.co.uk/robotics/nomad.asp, would be the way in to a better understanding of the brain, but I haven't kept up with their progress. I'm still hoping they'll find some answers while I'm around.
