Comment self driving cars (Score 1) 389

I still don't understand the hype for them.

The last four vehicles I owned - Escort zx-2 that one had a check engine light come on from a faulty sensor in the first ten thousand miles. Nissan pickup - that one after two years started stalling and stopping on damp days because of a fuel sensor, my mercury sable had a sensor break in the first 5000 miles - when the check engine light popped on , I pulled into the dealership at closing time and forced them to fix it. I have a jeep wrangler now, and whenever the outside temp goes over 89 degrees f and I turn the air conditioning on, the car shudders and jerkes then the check engine light pops on with a low speed idle fault in the OBD (finally bought an obd kit to clear faults to pass inspection).

The point is, I've owned 4 brand new cars, and each car had faults.

How can anyone expect that the car driving itself won't fault and cause cataclysmic accidents? maybe 100,000 cars will be perfect. Maybe a 1,000,000 cars will be perfect. But based on my experience - I'll be freaking terrified if everyone else has self driving cars.

I worked for an Allstate agent.

He and his wife went on a two week company paid "business trip" to Monte Carlo in Monaco - the room they stayed in was over 500 bucks a night (paid airfare +per Diem). This was for their top 1000 agents plus the allstate corporate folks.

For the "business meetings" they had a few seminars to attend, and a party night - I forget which star they had perform that time - but since they do this yearly - one of the stars was Huey Lewis.

So think about the cost of that yearly party just for allstate - and think about how much cash is spent on them - then come back and talk about "collective cushion".

Same here. I pay Netflix for ad free viewing.

I will stop paying for netflix when it's not ad free viewing.

Ads are meant to pay for shows. I should not be forced to pay to watch ads.

We cut the cord because of ads - not because we're willing to pay for ad free content. If comcast served up all of its content adfree - I'd jump right into comcast.

It's that simple.

Free TV can have ads.

Commercial free tv can charge for content.

This is what the consumer wants.

That sounds a lot like - "no, we're not going to listen, and yes, we're going to add the feature despite a request to allow the public to evaluate it."

I remember the days when I signed up for /. /. keeps changing, and the traffic keeps getting less and less.

When's the last time /. took down a site?

Nah, send them to the southside of chicago where almost 900 people have been shot, and soon to be a movie about "chiraq" because of the egregious amounts of black on black violence to the tune of 2800.

I'm hoping the people marching against cops will start marching in chicago after the recent shooting of a 4 year old - she caught a round in the head. Pretty sure she wasn't in a gang or deserving of the shot.

I live in the southside and hear the gunfire occasionally.

But yeah - the best efforts are focused on the occasional cop bit. Cause there's thousands of those (well not really - but it takes the sting out eh?)

The motorola Quantico or the kyocera dura XT are the dumbphones I've carried - I like riding my motorcycle year round - phones like those can take shock, water, being thrown against a wall and still work.

I've owned both and while I liked the Quantico better - US Cellular moved out of my region so I was forced to the dura XT on Sprint.

This is the reason why I never played any online games with blizzard.

As an adult, I can't spend the time required to see everything. I have to actually work and sleep.

I agree with them locking out people who cheat while playing online players. I disagree venomously with them locking out non online players for using all codes and hacks to play. They bought the game - if they want to be invulnerable during all phases of the game - then it should be allowed in single play.

It's unfortunate that the major game companies started focusing on metrics and statistics. If they just focused on making good games that were free from bowing to the company their profits would increase.
