IGnatius T Foobar writes: "Third-party solutions to unlock Microsoft Outlook from Exchange Server are nothing new, but this one aims to solve the problem in an open-standards way. The folks from Bynari have worked with the developers of the open source Citadel collaboration server, to build an Outlook connector that uses the open-standard iCalendar and vCard data formats, allowing Outlook's calendar and address book to work with any open source server, and still interoperate with open source clients. In an era where Microsoft is fighting harder than ever for its proprietary data formats, this is a nice step in the right direction. Could this be the piece of the puzzle that really begins a mass migration away from Exchange?"

IGnatius T Foobar writes: "Microsoft has developed a small plug-in device that investigators can use to quickly extract forensic data from computers that "may have been used in crimes." It basically bypasses all of the Windows security (decrypting passwords, etc.) in order to eliminate all that pesky privacy when the police have physical access to your computer. Just one more reason not to run Windows on your computer."

IGnatius T Foobar writes: "In what will hopefully turn out to be the end of Exchange lock-in, the folks at Bynari have released a new version of their Outlook connector product that allows Outlook to connect to IMAP servers using standard data formats — iCalendar for calendars, vCard for contacts, etc. This is in contrast to their older product which spoke IMAP but still stored the data in proprietary Outlook formats. This is advantageous because both Outlook and standards-based clients (including webmail and web calendaring) can now be first class citizens in the same organization. There are already several open source groupware systems that use this data model natively. Will this finally be the end of Exchange dominance forced upon organizations who are required to support Outlook?"

IGnatius T Foobar writes: "Open source has more than a few "Exchange killer" messaging and collaboration packages to choose from. Some are better than others, and some are "free-er" than others. It's disappointing that some of the ones that look good end up requiring a paid upgrade to a commercial version if you want the full feature set. Happily, the folks at Citadel.org have announced that their system is now end-to-end GPLv3 across the entire code base, making the entire platform available to everyone on the same terms."
