Submission + - Target scams masses to promote a new trade-in program 1

An anonymous reader writes: Last week, Engadget published that article about how Target is offering a promo deal, for a few days, to trade in ipads. To announce to the world that, like Best Buy, they are now accepting devices at sub-ebay prices.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/05/target-trading-200-for-1stgen-ipad/

The whole thing turned out to be a complete scam.

From 100+ posters, my own experience and talking to people in my area:

Target has run out of their "special" gift cards on day 1 in NYC area. And started turning people away under any and all excuses.
Including "email guest.relations@target.com, they will surely take care of you and honor the deal", just to get people out of the door.

Several of us emailed them and got a "go away"-email with the following insult (quote): "While this may not benefit you today, your feedback helps us make our stores, merchandise and services better for every guest."

Small mobs formed at several of the stores on several occasions and THEY got the stores to do the right thing and got a trade-in or simply a discount on new purchases.

Most of the stores were also out of ipads and couldn't even do an upgrade, as a compromise.

Engadget has not commented on it or updated the story. One could probably look and see if Target is one of the sponsors. But Engadget has never been a NEWS company, so it's not a surprise.

Manager told me that while USUALLY Target Mobile is a separate entity, this promotion was run by the Target itself (and showed me an email with instructions).

Quite an epic fail that the largest retail chain uses scam tactics to promote a new service that they refuse to support. Not helped by the matter that they failed to stock sufficient inventory of the items they are ultimately trying to promote.

Submission + - Sweden is closing many prisons due to lack of prisoners. (rtoz.org)

rtoz writes: Sweden is taking steps to close many prisons due to lack of prisoners.

This year alone, four prisons and a detention center got closed in Sweden.

The percentage of the population in Sweden prison is significantly lower than in most other countries.

And,the Swedish prison system is not generally severe. For example, the top-of-the-line prison in Sollentuna, Sweden includes cells with comfortable mattresses and private bathrooms. After prisoners hit the weight room, they can cook up a meal in the state of the art kitchen before kicking back and watching TV on the couch. Sweden’s prison authorities are quick to point out that every square inch of the prison can be seen on a security camera.

Though the Sweden Government is taking steps to close the prisons, crime rate in sweden is not reduced. Actually Crime rate it getting increased in Sweden. It seems they are planning to take steps for preventing the crimes than focusing on sentencing the people involve in criminal activities.

Submission + - U.S. Postal Service to Make Sunday Deliveries for Amazon

guttentag writes: The New York Times is reporting The USPS has struck a deal to deliver Amazon’s packages on Sundays — a first for both. The Postal Service, which lost nearly $16 billion last year, often loses money on first-class mail delivery, but package delivery is profitable. The Postal Service said it expected to make more such deals with other merchants, seeking a larger role in the $186 billion e-commerce market. For this holiday shopping season, Sunday delivery of Amazon products will be limited to the Los Angeles and New York metropolitan areas. In 2014 it is expected to expand to other cities including Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Phoenix.

mattydread23 writes: "Your hands are big. My hands are small," writes Melissa Perenson. That's why the new Layouts for Living feature introduced by Swiftkey is so awesome — it helps tailor my Android device to your personal use patterns. The reviewer calls it one of the few Android apps that makes her demonstrably more productive on a daily basis.

Submission + - USS ZUMWALT (DDG 1000) running on Linux (arstechnica.com)

SanDogWeps writes: Sean Gallagher over at ARS Technica reports that when the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) puts to sea later this year, it will be different from any other ship in the Navy's fleet in many ways. The $3.5 billon ship is designed for stealth, survivability, and firepower, and it's packed with advanced technology. And at the heart of its operations is a virtual data center powered by off-the-shelf server hardware, various flavors of Linux, and over 6 million lines of software code.

If you choose to deliberately attack your countries economy, it HAS to be treason.

Certainly a lot worse than leaking some information about 3 letter agencies breaking laws and eroding your freedom!

Wake the hell up.
The Tea Party are far worse than anything that the most extreme McCarthyism ever dreamed that communists could do to your country.

All of which entirely misses the point that has been made.
If I want to ignore the contract I agreed to with Apple/Amazon/Google, etc.,
I could do so and find free sources of music, and remove DRM or other signatures.

However the point and discussion at hand is about the transition from buying a copy of music to being loaned a copy, at a fee.
