Finally bought the bullet, as it were. It can be dangerous to do research without really meaning it.
The LG (something) 4040B drive - no link available. Combo everything +, -, and -RAM.
The only downside I can see is the software, neoDVD is a little anemic. The rendering is lightning fast (2-3 times faster than any other I've tried) but it's not going to do any awesome projects...
Next bit of research is software, then.
This is really tough to find out. Is it safe to get a +RW drive?
Nice that after I do all of my research, I see this post.
Of course, it was quite informative. +RW is a slam-dunk superior format. Is it always readable on everything though? No real reliable info about my model of PS2.
Does anyone know about SCPH 30001?
Edit: Hm. The more I think about it, +RW is the slam-dunk superior format for RW uses, and -R is the superior format for write once. Makes sense, and also the one real reason to get a dual-burner.
Edit: Talking to myself. I tried the +RW in my PS2 - works perfectly!
Found a great free hosting deal! It's a pro edition for 3 years free. POP Mail, mail forwarding, PHP, MySQL, and SSH!
Check it out at 1 and 1.
I found Gallery an OSS photo gallery app that is great! It's worth a look.
Wow, now this is one impressive machine.
It even has its own user site
Not sure how I missed the Slashdot article about it, but the more I look at it, the less it looks like a really dedicated games machine. The buttons seem especially limited.
It seems to be designed as a very high end Palm device. For one, the price should be lower if it was a games machine. To sustain that price, you can't sell it against $99 Game Boys. It does come with WordSmith, and presumably all Palm apps will run on it.
It looks sweet though.
A nice site full of free tabs. I haven't looked at the quality yet, but the QUANTITY!
Whenever I wanted to run remote X apps in the past, I did one of a few things.
First, I tried MicroImages X server. A bit clunky, and if I remember correctly, 8-bit. It was contained in a root window.
Second, I tried (I think) StarNet's X-Win32 server. The demo expires after 2 hours, but it was pretty good. I don't use it for anything even remotely serious, so the demo worked great for me.
I just installed CygWin's XFree86 and was fighting with it for a bit. I wanted to get a seamless session going through SSH. Finally I found an article that helped me use xauth here.
That was the ticket. Now I can do X apps side by side with Win apps on my WinXP box! Cool!
Nuff said.
Red Hat decided to make a new project called Fedora. The intent is to make a fully open source & freely avaiable solution rather than the mishmash of commercial & chargeware that Red Hat has become.
This is bound to confuse the market a little, can we still say Red Hat is free? Or is Red Hat ONLY an enterprise product? Mostly, I'm concerned with their rather loose definition of open source. Debian had to explicitly state their "social contract" as well as their free software guidelines. This is a good thing for Debian, because you always know where they stand.
Now, with Fedora, nothing is clearly established.
I still get very frustrated with Red Hat anyway, it's a "good enough" Linux distro when you can get "great" just as easily.
Interesting post some guy makes here. The crashguard is a no-brainer, the help file thing is interesting. It would be amusing to see how the defrag changes things.
Too bad I gave up on Win9x a while back.
It's legal. It's not. It's WAY not. It is, but kinda.
Current score: it is
(Oh. Sorry. Downloading MP3s)
The consoles below cost myth: Here
Drat, entered this way before Slashdot had it and didn't save. Why MUST I preview???
Silly putty in bulk hee hee.
Or if you want LOTS, it's available in REAL bulk
A neat Kid's Crafts recipe page.
Wow What a list of 3D interfaces.
