the wind was already taken out of the second hand market by having an anti-theft lock turned on by default. if you went to craigslist to buy a phone, you need to know if there is an antitheft lock on, because if you try to reset and install your own stuff, you could have bought a phone that you can't use. There are more structured options like amazon (buying direct, not from a marketplace person) or gazelle, but they get their markups.

Right now I'm still using my two-year-old iphone 5. Once I got out of my att contract I took it to an mvno for prepaid service. I chose rok mobile for the best balance of low cost and high data cap.

Reason number 48372534786 why it's better just to universally block advertisements on the internet.

Apple has been leading on this front with several initiatives to protect users from malicious ads. One of them was a setting in Safari to only accept cookies from the first-party site, so when you go to cnn.com the browser accepts a cookie from cnn.com but not from malvertiser.com, who has a banner ad on the site.

This upset google because it cut into their business model of selling effective ad space. So google inserted malicious code into webpages to hack the safari browser and override security settings so it could download unwanted and potentially malicious files onto users computers. Because of this, google received the biggest fine in FTC history and is being sued for privacy violations in the UK.

Think about this for a second, and what it means. A website overriding browser security settings to serve unwanted and possibly malicious files. This is outrageous and unethical, and if it were Microsoft then the entire internet community would be enraged. Also think about it in light of this article on malvertisements, which google was actively propagating.

Apple has since taken the cat and mouse game further, so the setting is "allow from current website only". I expect malvertisers to scramble to overcome this block, but I hope that legitimate respected top tier internet companies act a little more ethically.

People who define themselves by the shit they own will eat this up!

I agree. apple users are snobs who define their identities by showing off their gadgets. I don't go near that, this is why I have a nexus one and moto360 writs watch along with a galaxy tab and chromebook on which I'm running Linux.

Very insightful. It would seem that you could build a simple processing facility to distill out propane from the hydrocarbon muck. Yeah would need a similar facility for purified methane anyway, so what's the diff? Not much.

It's not that smart people don't want the job, smart people aren't electable. During an election they'll inevitably make a comment that hurts a special interest group and get whisked out of the public spot light before the next sun rise.

the key differentiator isn't smart people. it's people of conscience. people of conscience couldn't tie themselves into the mental knots required to say things like the tea party: "keep government hands off our social security!"

It's the pandering that's the hardest part for a person of conscience to accept.
