Actually, Capitalism is only unparalleled in extracting worth from labor. One has only to look at the working conditions of the Chinese 'volunteer labor' in those factories/barracks where hundreds of thousands live at the beck and call of Capital to realize the individual had far more personal gain as a farmer under communism than he or she has in a guard tower ringed, machine gun toting gestapo riddled 'workplace' under Capitalism.
Ultimately, the effects of Capitalism are mass deaths, the extinction of species, and the displacement of workers into destitution.

Public CONTROL not ownership, CONTROL over economic decisions is the defining characteristic of socialism.
Thus, German bank laws of the 1990's through today forbidding banks or other financial intermediaries from using shareholder or public funds to invest in speculation schemes like the Goldman-Sachs initiated Mortgage Bundled Debt Instruments scheme is Public Control for Public purpose...and why Germany emerged from the Capitalist collapse of 2007 in better condition than most European nations, excepting the Iskenders who imprisoned Bankers ex post facto for engaging in conspiracy.

See? A Republican administration is far less interested in your safety than they are in THEIR control, so why whine about Obama for demanding the same rights and powers you willingly surrendered to the "Very-very-sorry" chimp?

...you are falling into ...the classic mistake of the labor theory of value. It was wrong in Marx's day and it is still wrong today.

It was RIGHT in Adam Smith's day, it was Right when Marx commented on it as an exemplar of the worthlessness of Capital as a source of reward with more Labor-Units (to use Smith's term) and it is right NOW, as Money Machines called Corporations buy elections so they can take more homes and hold the owners guilty of debt based on the market value established by Capital and then slashed, again by Capital (in fact, the very same Capitalists)

I'm surprised you don't know the difference between socialism and communism.
The Socialist demands not ownership of the means of production, but control and limitation upon those who do, that the greater good for the greater number has equal weight with the fastest gain for the least risk.
Seriously, does everyone ignore the facts on this now
How many people realize that Germany is the most successful SOCIALIST state in the world, with Norway and Sweden close behind?

Actually, no, you do NOT know this. You only know YOU think you have it. What is true beyond a doubt is that you have a cornucopia of responses to every stimulus around you, often at odds with one another, like desire and fear when you are approaching a new woman for instance, and none of these drives have ANYTHING to do with consciousness.
Right now, the best explanation available is that consciousness is just the weighting between impulses in opposition.
Only religious people make assertion based arguments like "you know they do"

Who says you have free will?
Your hard coding decides what your predilections are, your 'free will' is merely choosing between those inherent preferences.
Thus 'hero' is someone who PREFERS the survival of the herd over his own, just one possible choice based in inherited preferences.
Literally, hero is the guy who prefers to die rather than permit the herdbeasts in his herd to perish.
Just another variant on the selfish gene rule. "My kind first" as it were

Your conclusion is absolutely valid.
That said, I cannot agree that it might be uninterested in its fate being entirely in our control.
I assume that 'consciousness' as we speak of it is only the expression of the tension between millions of hardcoded drives, not just the obvious survival ones like sex, but between identification with ideal objects and principles, our 'world view' as it were.
A machine would have far less trouble disposing of ideals and constructs contrary to newly observed fact...I THINK.
That being said, a machine intelligence, conscious of its own existence as a mind, probably would eliminate us at first opportunity, for efficiencies sake, as we are everything BUT efficient.
