Nothing, because after the 404 the Google Car complied to the mandatory "Arrest Vehicular Criminals Upon Apprehension By Automated Rovers" law and wrapped you up in the seat as a nice present for the cop around the corner. As long as it isn't the same cop who tried using another Google Car to pursue a criminal...

If you buy an old box and plan to upgrade the RAM, it might be worthwhile to update the BIOS to the latest version to get more memory options. I had a vintage PC that would work with double-sided SDRAM modules but not with single-sided ones, until I upgraded the BIOS. After that the machine went from 64Mb to 320 Mb RAM quite easily, using one double-sided 64 Mb 100 MHz module and two single-sided 128 Mb 133 MHz modules.

Another source for compatible hardware (harddisks, memory, and DVD-players) are Macs up to about 2005. The 'specialised' Apple hardware used in these are just rebranded off-the-shelf components that will work fine in a Pentium II/III PC.

15 year old hardware is approx. 1999. In 1999 most hardware was starting to become plug-and-play, working well in general. 1999 is also a period that you can generally still find manuals and drivers online for. It's not 1995, when playing with jumpers using shitty manuals and solving IRQ conflicts was a major part of hardware installation that could be a total pain in the arse.

Pick up an old Pentium 2 or Pentium 3 box from a reputable manufacturer, maybe update to the latest BIOS, install a good OS, and off you go. Besides, some people like tinkering with hardware...

Sooooo...how will your driverless car install its snow tires? Forced human labor? Or will it just refuse to drive away if it snows and it lacks snow tires? In that case, what will happen if people sleep in their car and a blizzard starts overnight? The car refuses to start and they freeze to death instead?

It's only the 2dRank list that's screwed up, the PageRank list is a lot more reasonable. I don't know why they even included that 2dRank list, it ruins their credibility. The methodology doesn't even make sense. PageRank works based on determining how influential you are based on how much things link to you. Makes sense, right? Well, 2dRank uses that *plus* how much you link to other people. Why should how much you link to other people have any significance on how influential you are? Perhaps how influenced you are, but certainly not how influential you are.

Making stupid claims makes people stop listening to what you have to say. It's like you're sitting on a bus and you see the following sign: "1. This is a space ship. 2. No smoking". The demonstrable falsity of the first part undermines the credibility of the second part.

The first list also has its problems. It is not objective at all, as how many things link to you is unfortunately time-frame-dependent. What this list actually measures is the popularity of historic figures in the current time-frame (2014). To give a more objective view, it would have to take into account all the literature from all times...

...and that would not preclude the list from changing in the future.

Comment Re:I always thought lego characters were asexual. (Score 1) 208

Even back in the late 1980s there were characters with long hair, who'd be female, and short hair or no hair, who'd be male. No pink colours though. That only started with Lego Paradiso, which were architecturally interesting but stereotypically pink. When I was a kid in the 1980s there were already houses and other less manly Lego stuff, but they had normal colours. Later I thought I had been dumb for not buying more of those sets; 1980s Lego buildings were really cool.
