Not necessarily. What's the cost of your own router vs the rental fee spread out over the months that equal the cost of full upfront. I've found that it's a wash. But when you rent the modem, it's fully supported, they push out firmware updates, and when it fails, not replaced free. When you purchase your own modem, it's all on you.

Mr. Anonymous Coward, I am confident in positing you either work for Comcast or Time Warner.

My Arris-Motorola 6121 cost roughly $65 on Amazon at the time I purchased it. Comcast wants to charge me $8/month for use of their own modem. Even if my modem had died a day out of its one year warranty, I'd have saved $31. As it is, I've had it significantly longer than that and it's still going strong.

the keyboard that is of quality is not only 25$.

I've used the Surface Pro 3 keyboard, and it is really awful. So maybe a fair comparison would be an iPad with a cheap $5 keyboard from China.

Actually that crap Surface keyboard is why I think it's unfair to call them laptop competitors... no one would buy a laptop with a keyboard that bad. The Surface exists in its own little niche. It's way too heavy to be a tablet competitor, and it's pretty bad as a laptop replacement.

Funny, I don't see an effort to get more female roofers, plumbers, electricians, garbage workers, or any other male dominated professions. What makes this one so special? If women don't like a profession, then they don't go into it. Stop trying to force gender equality when it's not wanted nor necessary.

Seriously? If you lived in Seattle, you'd know there are statutes requiring that every government-funded project employ, at a minimum, some specific percentage of minority- and women-owned businesses when hiring contractors, roofers, plumbers, electricians, etc.

Washington State is a (poorly run) nanny state. I work at UW. This past month, in order to qualify for a $125 "wellness incentive" on my health insurance next year, I had to fill out a "well-being assessment" that, among other things, asked me multiple questions regarding whether I felt "empowered" at work. Based on my answers, one of the suggested activities I could do for credit (in addition to the more reasonable "eat five fruits and vegetables" and "walk at least 35,000 steps a week") was "meet with a mentor". Yeah, you guys can't even agree on a budget but you can spend money developing an overly-simplistic computerized system to pretend you're actually caring for your employees...

If you do not like what the Mozilla Foundation is doing with Firefox, and they don't seem to care what you think - join the millions of us who've already switched to a different browser.

I was a loyal Firefox user for many years, but somewhere along the way Mozilla lost its focus. The things I used to need Firefox for (DOM Inspector, JavaScript debugging, Ad Block) are readily available with other browsers. So I bid adieu to their political agendas and bloated infrastructure (seriously - how much money do you need to develop a web browser?) and moved on.

Then you also remember when TBS/TNT started their programs at :05 and :35.

Which meant that when you changed channels to any other station, you missed the first 5 minutes of that program.

Yeah, that was bloody annoying. Nowadays with DVRs it wouldn't be as big a deal; but I only had one VCR so it did screw things up sometimes.
