Submission + - International Launch of "Boy" in joepardy (stuff.co.nz)

capt.Hij writes: The film "Boy" has been a extremely popular in New Zealand. The film has been leaked and has spread on the internet. So far it has only been released in New Zealand (except for a brief viewing at the Sundance Film Festival), and it appears that the international release is in jeopardy because of doubts that it can be sold. In particular the film has not been released yet in Australia which hosts a large number of kiwis. Another point of view (with more links) can be found in the following blog entry. The speed of the internet and the limited ability to give every film a world wide viewing at once raises a question as to why the film execs insist that we all have to wait and find a seat at our local movie theaters.

"I understood that the North Korean IT industry had good potential because of their skilled software engineers, but due to the lack of communication it was almost impossible to work with them productively from outside," said Volker Eloesser, president of Nosotek. "So I took the next logical step and started a company here."

To answer your question, it says that amoral managers are willing to get in bed with the most evil of monsters if it means they can make money. If this is the next "logical step" then something is seriously wrong with this person's decision making process.

The use of rf clickers like the interwrite prs makes this old news. Some profs already use the "clickers" for attendance as well as for in-class participation. Most use it to give students a chance for extra credit and to get feedback from students. Off course at the end of the semester it all comes down to just getting the grade (sadly). Personally, students should be treated as if they were adults. They should be able to decide if they will go to class. I do not understand why these profs want to force people to go to their class when they do not want to go. It is better to have students who want to be there.

Indian Military Hopes to Weaponize the Searing "Ghost Pepper" 267

coondoggie writes "The military in India is looking to weaponize the world's hottest chili, the bhut jolokia or 'ghost pepper,' according to a number of news outlets. The Bhut Jolokia chili pepper from Assam, India is no ordinary pepper. In tests first conducted by the New Mexico State University in 2008 and subsequently confirmed by Guinness World records and others, the Bhut Jolokia reached over one million Scoville heat units, while the next hottest, the Red Savina Habenero, clocks in at a mere 577,000. Scoville units are a universally accepted measure of chili hotness."

Nmap 5.20 Released 36

ruphus13 writes "Nmap has a new release out, and it's a major one. It includes a GUI front-end called Zenmap, and, according to the post, 'Network admins will no doubt be excited to learn that Nmap is now ready to identify Snow Leopard systems, Android Linux smartphones, and Chumbies, among other OSes that Nmap can now identify. This release also brings an additional 31 Nmap Scripting Engine scripts, bringing the total collection up to 80 pre-written scripts for Nmap. The scripts include X11 access checks to see if X.org on a system allows remote access, a script to retrieve and print an SSL certificate, and a script designed to see whether a host is serving malware. Nmap also comes with netcat and Ndiff. Source code and binaries are available from the Nmap site, including RPMs for x86 and x86_64 systems, and binaries for Windows and Mac OS X. '"

Disney Releases 3D Texture Mapper Source Code 83

dsavi writes "Ptex, Walt Disney Animation Studio's cutting-edge 3D texture mapping library which was first used on nearly every surface in the 2008 animated feature Bolt, was released under the BSD license on Friday. Quoting the announcement on monophyl.com: 'We expect to follow Ptex with other open source projects that we hope the community will find beneficial. We will soon be launching a new Walt Disney Animation Studios Technology page under disneyanimation.com. It will include links to our open source projects as will as a library of recent publications.' This looks good for open source 3D graphics."

Asus DR-570 E-Reader To Bring OLED Display 70

MojoKid writes "Reportedly, Asus will be introducing the DR-570 color eReader by the end of 2010, but it won't be just another one in the crowd. In fact, it just might be a game-changer. The reader will supposedly have a 6" screen, but rather than using e-ink like every other reader out there, this one will utilize a color OLED screen. Word is the unit will last a whopping 122 hours on a full charge. It should also be able to run Flash applications, download books over 3G to Wi-Fi, and most likely surf the web, unlike any other reader out there." Asus will be rolling out two other ebook reader models this year as well.

The point is should the cost matter? Someday that vanadium oxide microbolometer may be easier to obtain and be in more general use. Should the availability of the tech matter or should the courts actually use some sort of sound judgement about how intrusive authorities can be? The availability of the technology is not relevant to whether or not the government is stepping on your rights. The technology to break into your house has always been cheap and available yet for some reason surveillance is treated differently.

That does sound great. Someone wrote an app for that, but unfortunatley it was rejected. When the folks at Apple realized that it was for medical use and that someone might see the words "penis," "areola," or "clavicle" the app was not allowed to be sold in their store. Since it is not officially blessed by Apple you cannot use it even though you purchased the damn thing and presumably are an adult. Now be quiet, go browse the web like a nice doctor, and move along.

Submission + - Glenn Beck Loses Effort to Obtain Domain Name (wordpress.com)

capt.Hij writes: Glenn Beck tried to have the domain name glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com revoked. His lawyers submitted a complaint to ICANN via WIPO. His request has been denied. More details can be found at http://thebrowntweedsociety.com/2009/11/02/glenn-beck-case-part-1/ By the way I heard this and doubt it is true, but somewhere I read that Glenn Beck raped and killed a girl in 1990.
