Doesn't seem to work for me. Sort of.

The "introductory" video on Achievement Hunter's Let's Play YouTube channel plays using the the HTML5 player, but nothing else seems to work.

Weird. I've been watching HTML5 videos in >720p resolution for some time now. What OS are you using? I'm using it on Windows. You enabled MSE via the about:config page, yes?

Comment Re:MSE Support (Score 1) 156

I enabled MSE in Firefox in the previous version, and the HTML5 YT videos seemed to work fine except 1080/60p videos, which stuttered a lot. As of v37, that seems to have also been fixed. YMMV, but it's A-OK for me.

It may not be on by default, and it may be 'incomplete', but I turned that on in Firefox some time ago and can view HTML5 YT videos in resolutions greater than 720p. It's certainly good enough for now (though I don't know why it's not on by default).

Submission + - Kpop music video by Crayon Pop is a tribute to Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, etc. (youtube.com)

Tumbleweed writes: Korean pop group Crayon Pop, known for their quirky concepts such as their viral hit "Bar Bar Bar" has released a new song and music video, 'FM' (meaning Field Manual — slang for someone who is very by-the-book and inflexible). The music video portrays the Crayon Pop members as transforming Power Rangers (or Super Sentai)-style heroes (who also dress up in Sailor Moon-style outfits in part of the video), and battling bad guys. A lot of nostalgic fun for those of a certain age...and the song is good, too!

And this is why we should not teach CS101 in Java or Python. If they'd been forced to use C this whole experiment would have turned out differently.

Not at all. If you wrote your C in memory string handling as stupidly as they wrote the Python and Java you will still get worse performance in C (e.g. each iteration malloc a new string and then strcpy and strcat into it, and free the old string; compared to buffered file writes you'll lose). It's about failing to understand how to write efficient code, not about which language you chose.

Pi Day Extraordinaire 107

First time accepted submitter DrTJ writes Today is Pi day. This year is a bit more extraordinary as it is 3/14/15 (in American date format). To celebrate, USA Today has posted a number of videos of kids reciting Pi, one of them to 8,784 digits. The Washington Post highlights the story of a couple who decided to make it their special day. "Donahue, 33, a Legal Aid attorney, fell for Karmel’s geeky side as soon as they met. On a beach vacation with her friends in 2012, a psychic told her, 'You are about to meet your soulmate.' Three days later, she walked into Kostume Karaoke night at Solly’s Tavern along the U Street corridor and saw a man onstage croaking out the Backstreet Boys’s 'I Want It That Way.' By the end of the night, he would be serenading her with Cake’s 'The Distance' — the song the DJ will play when they cut the pie."

I can only presume your talking about research grants combined with salary, despite saying "The average salary" because otherwise you are simply flat wrong. The average salary for (full) professors in the US is $98,974.

Should we teach everyone basic first aid and CPR, fundamentals of mechanics, and the basics of how to sew, cook, etc.? Yes, yes we should.

I don't think the "Teach Everyone to Code" movement is about making everyone professional programmers; it's about ensuring that everyone gets exposed the basics of how programming works, just like they get exposed to the basics of a great many other things in their schooling.
