Submission + - SAP Ordered to pay $1.3bn to Oracle 1

jools33 writes: In what can only be seen as a victory for Oracle, SAP AG have been ordered to pay $1.3bn to Oracle by a jury in Oakland, California, in what Bloomberg states will be the largest ever payout is US Copyright history:
the FT article
SAP were charged and admitted guilt of the theft of Oracle software through its intermediary company Tommorow Now.
Oracle had asked for a payout of $1.7bn, which SAP had countered to $140m. SAP are considering post trial motions / appeal. Could this leave SAP in a weakened position / ripe for takeover? What will the eventual consequences be for SAP?

Couldn't agree more. My wife became a doula after our first child was born, and we had our second at home with a midwife. So many comments on this board are completely ignorant, and makes me wonder how this is good topic for Slashdot. The vast majority of this country is uneducated about childbirth, and just relies on the factory system in hospitals. I avoid birthing discussions in general, because people just want to be validated, not educated.

8-Year Fan-Made Game Project Shut Down By Activision 265

An anonymous reader writes "Activision, after acquiring Vivendi, became the new copyright holder of the classic King's Quest series of adventure game. They have now issued a cease and desist order to a team which has worked for eight years on a fan-made project initially dubbed a sequel to the last official installment, King's Quest 8. This stands against the fact that Vivendi granted a non-commercial license to the team, subject to Vivendi's approval of the game after submission. After the acquisition, key team members had indicated on the game's forums (now stripped of their original content by order of Activision) that Activision had given the indication that it intended to keep its current fan-game licenses, but was not interested in issuing new ones."

I think it's fair to say that a multi-megawatt laser flying on a military aircraft which can target, hit and destroy an in-flight ballistic missile is not "girly". That is, unless the flight crew are all little girls dressed in pink princess dresses.

And if they can do all that,...would we really care!

Only if no one asks, and no one tells.

Most unions are, quite obviously, industrial in nature. In both cases, their revenue comes from willing contributions of labor.

Nope. I have union dues stolen from my paycheck each month to support whatever crap SEIU wants. They bribed Gray Davis into mandatory unionization for California state workers. This isn't a whine, since I know full well I could get a job elsewhere, etc. etc. But given the bullying nature of unions, I wouldn't call it "willing" contributions. More like extortion to keep a job.

This statement is so utterly sensible, it would never hold up in a court of law. Yeah, they shouldn't have been screwing around, but does this really merit anything other than some departmental discipline? The fact this is a national news story (and a Slashdot story, only because it involves a videogame) is absurd.
