Submission + - Court of California Orders Zediva to Stop

donweel writes: Looks like the boom has been lowered on Zediva, as anticipated. Have to see how this plays out. Here is the mail I received: "Dear Zediva Member,

You may have heard by now that we're having to lay off our DVD-changing monkeys... :-)

A couple of years ago we came up with an idea for the next generation of DVD rentals. It seemed to us logical and evolutionary that if a customer was able to rent and play a DVD in his home, there should be no reason why he or she could not do that from the Internet cloud. After all, you can do that with a DVR, so why not with a DVD player?

Well, it turns out to have been a little more complicated than that ...
We are suspending Zediva's operations to comply with an order by the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

While we hope to be back online soon, we don't know when (or whether) that will happen. We are disappointed by this turn of events, and that we are not permitted to serve you.

We are quite aware that some of you have unused credits with us and appreciate your patience as we figure out our next steps. Stay tuned for more information via email.

Thank you again for your great support. It has been a blast serving you.
Regards,
The Zediva Team"

I agree, once the race to the bottom starts it can only result in lack of quality. I remember going to the Woodwards store, in my neighborhood. You paid a little more but only top quality items and extra service where what you got. And if you where not satisfied you could return the product. Groceries where delivered by conveyor belt to a station where you could drive up and they where loaded in your trunk for you. The hardware department had all the quality tools and a variety of fasteners you could buy individually no display packs. There where benches for the old timers to hang out and a malt shop for the kids. The dollar stores put them out of business. And to make matters worse foreign business people tried to buy their name to use on cheap dollar store imitations. When the Woodwards family declined this they continued with cheap knockoffs like Woodwinds, etc. Sure you can save a little money here and there but surely quality must have some meaning, quality of product, and quality of life. The last Landmark Woodwards building was used by squatters and for Raves etc, I think was recently converted to some kind of apartment complex.. yay .. Hudson's Bay next stop.

The iPhone Serial Port Hack 217

An anonymous reader writes "The iPhone's little known secret, a hidden serial port, is revealed. 'The real benefit in all of this is that there are so many console packages for iPhone in Cydia now that you can have a fully functional computer, as useful as a Linux box, but without carrying around a laptop.'"

I have come very close to hitting these people, they do resemble zombies, not all of them are iPod equipped though. Yes it would improve the gene pool to strike them down, unfortunately this would cause pain and suffering to others, as well as the zombie, the driver and any immediate family. In days past they would have been eaten by something as nature intended.

I have no us for a camera on my iPod, but I don't mind the idea of an iPod on my camera. I have used my iPod classic as a camera drive, I was disappointed when the new generation iPods lost that ability. I could see a camera with iPod interface. Clip it on for wifi, Geo-Tagging, Photo display, extra storage. With the software and the IPod App store possibilities are endless.

They just added a MyDDO player blog and char viewer Looks like the Turbine people have worked really hard to make this happen. An Online store will sell in-game items and dungeons. Also VIP membership subscription is available which includes store points and many other features such as a shared bank and access to extra characters and races. A combination of micro-transaction and subscription will keep the game alive."

Apple Announces iTunes 9, "LPs," Video Camera For the iPod Nano 521

Apple just finished their latest press event, and they revealed a number of new services and features for their products. They kicked things off by saying that iPhone OS 3.1 is now available. It will add the Genius recommendation technology to the App store, giving users suggestions on which apps they might find useful based on what others with similar needs use. They're also adding 30,000 ringtones that users can purchase. Next, they announced iTunes 9, which will use Genius to make mixes by analyzing songs in your library to see which go well together. iTunes is also seeing UI improvements for things like app management, and syncing utilities. You'll be able to easily transfer apps, music, and videos from one of your local devices to another, and there is integrated support for Twitter and Facebook if you want to send music as a gift. Another big new feature: iTunes LPs. These LPs will be a digital album with cover art, lyrics, videos, and other customized content created by the artists themselves. Moving on, they showed off a few new games: an Assassin's Creed sequel, an FPS called Nova that had impressive graphics and multiplayer capability, Riddim Ribbon, a futuristic driving/music game that lets you remix your songs by how you navigate the course, and Madden NFL 2010. Next, Apple announced a price cut for the 8GB iPod Touch and a doubling of available storage for the other models. It's also getting OpenGL 2.0. The iPod Classic is getting a storage upgrade from 120GB to 160GB. In addition, there are headphones that have a controller for the Shuffle. Finally, Jobs got down to his "one more thing": Apple will now be building a video camera into the back of every iPod Nano. Apparently it will be a simple matter to sync videos to your computer or put them up on YouTube, and they're building in an FM radio as well. A detailed liveblog of the event with a ton of screenshots is available at Engadget.

Sega Dreamcast Turns 10 193

traycerb writes "It's been 10 years since 9/9/1999, when the Dreamcast launched on American shores. The hardware was ahead of its time; online capability, web browser, a visual memory unit, and a controller that anticipated the much-loved Xbox 360 controller. The games were amazing: Jet Set Radio (the first popular 3d cell-shaded game on a console), Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (still the apotheosis of 2-d fighting; just try finding a copy on ebay), Soul Calibur (still looks good compared to the recent Xbox/PS3 versions), NFL 2K (came out of nowhere, and was so good that it shook EA into spending tens of millions of dollars to seal up exclusivity for NFL rights), and many others. No doubt some of the reasons for the Dreamcast's demise lay with Sega, whose dubious hardware decisions (ahem, 32x) finally caught up to them, in the form of ambivalence from both developers and gamers, just as the console-making world was shifting to the multinationals with big pockets who were willing to spend it on pricey hardware design (or could absorb the cost of faulty hardware design). It was also one of the first consoles widely used for homebrew. In honor of the 10th anniversary, a new game is being released for the Dreamcast, called Rush Rush Rally Racing. The Dreamcast is dead! Long live the Dreamcast!"
