The Number Resource Organization, the coordinating mechanism for the five Regional Internet Registries or RIRs, this morning announced that less than 5% of the world’s IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) addresses remain unallocated. The IPv4 pool first dipped below 10% in January 2010, and in the next nine months some 200 million addresses have subsequently been allocated from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to the RIRs.

NRO anticipates to allocate the last IPv4 address blocks to the registries within months.

Submission + - Ask SlashDot: More work, less time.

aunt edna writes: Here's one for your management to get their teeth into. I say 'your' because it's not proving an appetizing dish here where I am, not at all.
My proposal is to increase productivity through shortening the working day. I'm arguing that 10 to 4, with a half-hour for lunch, will actually boost productivity: the boost happens for various reasons, such as the condition the employee finds his or herself in on arriving to and departing from work: more relaxed (and a relaxed person works better) and positively looking forward to work because the slog has been removed. Having just 5.5 hours to work means a clearer vision & evaluation of what's important: prioritizing efficiently could be automatic.
Less stress, less illness, more loyalty, better work — what more could they want?
Well, it seems 'management' might just be a little stretched here — they just don't get it. Don't or won't. I think they are stuck with the idea that time = productivity, whereas anyone knows it's work = productivity.
Come on — what's the way forward with this?

Submission + - Watchout, Zombies have risen again! (funguerilla.com)

Anonymous Coward writes: "ZOMBIECON NYC is a loosely organized group of bloodthirsty zombies. They gather once a year to attack NYC in a theatrical, absurdist parody of blind consumerism and brainless politics. Each year, they choose a theme to resonate with the times and attack city landmarks accordingly, stopping frequently for brains and beers."

Submission + - Skype Integrates New Facebook And Group Video Call (blogspot.com)

RebelGadgets writes: "The new version of Skype for Windows now lets Facebook users chat with their friends on the booming social network.

Skype has now integrated the Facebook News Feed and Phonebook into the software. The company has also revitalised the look and feel, making voice and video calling, instant messaging, screen sharing and file sharing easy to navigate. In addition, users can now bring even more of their family and friends together with the new group video calling feature available in open beta.

With Facebook integration, users can see their Facebook News Feed in Skype, post status updates that can be synced with their Skype mood message, comment and like friends, updates & wall posts, call and SMS their Facebook friends on their mobile phones & landlines and also make a free Skype-to-Skype call if their Facebook friend is also a Skype contact.

With the new version of Skype, users will be able to receive a free trial for group video calling in beta. Skype has added a dynamic group video calling view, which is easy to follow who's talking by moving the focus to the person speaking on the call.

The new version of Skype also introduces automatic call recovery which helps users reconnect calls that are interrupted due to Internet connection problems.

Plus, the call quality manager gauges audio and video quality during calls, helping users to resolve problems.

Finally, the new Skype Home features a feed of mood messages from users, contacts, and tutorials on everything from how to make a video call to how to sign up for a subscription.

Skype said video-calling accounted for approximately 40 percent of all Skype-to-Skype minutes in the first half of the year.

The new version of Skype is available for download here.

Submission + - Mysterious pulsar with hidden powers discovered

Matt_dk writes: Observations with NASA's Chandra, Swift, and Rossi X-ray observatories, Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and ESA's XMM-Newton have revealed that a slowly rotating neutron star with an ordinary surface magnetic field is giving off bursts of X-rays and gamma rays. This discovery may indicate the presence of an internal magnetic field much more intense than the surface magnetic field, with implications for how the most powerful magnets in the cosmos evolve.

Submission + - Facebook, Microsoft Team Up Against Google (sfgate.com) 3

Pickens writes: "The San Francisco Chronicle reports that in a move that could be the biggest threat to Google's search standing yet Microsoft and Facebook announced that they're teaming up so that when someone uses Bing's search engine to look for a new car or a book, she can see which ones her friends liked. While industry watchers say this is an interesting move for search, what's most notable is that Facebook turned to Microsoft for this deal and not to the market leader, Google. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says there is a specific reason he wants to go with Bing. "They really are the underdog here," say Zuckerberg. "They're incentivized to go out and innovate. They have all these smart people and are trying to do all these new things." The real importance of this week's announcement is that it highlights the growing strategic conflict between Facebook and Google says analyst Ray Valdes. "There is a battle for the future of the Web, and it is not about search engines, but about the social Web.""
