Google Backs Open-Source CERT Group 13

alphadogg points to a Network World story, which begins "Google has thrown its weight behind a fledgling security reporting group for the open-source community. The search engine giant, long a proponent of open-source software, is now one of three sponsors of oCERT, the Open Source Computer Emergency Response Team. Launched in late March, oCERT aims to be a clearinghouse for data on security vulnerabilities in open-source products."

Strict German Computer Crime Law Now in Effect 226

SkiifGeek writes "With little fanfare, section 202c of the German computer crime laws came into effect over the weekend. Worryingly for Security professionals, the laws make the mere possession of (creates, obtains or provides access to, sells, yields, distributes or otherwise allows access to) many useful tools illegal. A similar law was proposed for the UK, however it was modified prior to passing through parliament due to the outcry from the industry. Phenoelit, KisMAC, the CCC, and the Month of PHP Bugs are just some of the relatively high profile projects and groups to have already taken measures to remove or modify content under this law."

Submission + - Blender Foundation to Create Open Movie, Open Game

Eloquence writes: The Blender Foundation, which maintains the open source 3D tool Blender, has announced two new projects, codenamed Peach and Apricot. Project Peach will be a new open source movie, following in the footsteps of last year's Elephants Dream project (which was initially codenamed Orange). Apricot, on the other hand, will use Blender in conjunction with open source 3D framework Crystal Space to create an open game, thereby showcasing both technologies.

I don't know, Amendments IX and X in the bill of rights explicitly reserve rights to the people:

                                Amendment IX.
The enumeration in the Constitution of certain
rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage
others retained by the people.

                                Amendment X.
The powers not delegated to the United States
by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the
States, are reserved to the States respectively, or
to the people.

Hard to see how Gonzalez wrigles around those and the writ.

If we saw an enormously unlikely event once, we might adopt your argument. But, sadly, with living organisms, we see these unlikely events over and over again. To put it in your terms, if I see a man draw a royal flush once, I might move on with my life. If I see him do it 10 times in a row, I look for a baseball bat.
