Apple says it had received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests for data over 6-month period from U.S. law .
The company, it had sought U.S. government permission to be able to share how many requests it received and how it handled them. Those requests were made as part of Prism, a program that takes large beams of data and helps the government find discrete, manageable strands of information.
According to the company, most of the requests were made by police investigating crimes
in order to find missing people, try to prevent suicide or try to locate a patient with Alzheimer’s disease.
The company also made clear how much access the government has.
“We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer content must get a court order,” Apple said in a statement on its website.
