There is a very very clear differentiation between the haves and have not's. Kind of a bad comparison *now*, but prior to becoming the 'rust belt', the northern Midwest produced 'things', as well as a huge middle class across multiple industries.

On one hand, one of the goals of advertising is to put a brand out there, and have people keep it in mind. On the other, kleenex and xerox are so dominant in that regard, that the product category itself is referenced by the brand name.
