BreezeDM writes: National Guard members tested new digital tools in simulated disaster training ground named Disaster City. Among the things tested were a deployable LTE 700 MHz network and interactive situational awareness map GeoSuites by General Dynamics. Submission + - One Low-Tech Reason To Be Optimistic About Nuclear Arms Controls

BreezeDM writes: Fast Company reports, Nuclear devices have gotten smaller, simpler, and easier to deploy, so the federal government is crowdsourcing arms control in the hopes that regular smartphones can help authorities track dangerous devices. Why We Should Be Optimistic About Arms Control?
Though no “nuclear material detection” smartphone apps currently exist, GammaPix, a radiological detection app, just released a full version of their app after months tinkering with user feedback from using their free version.

Submission + - Oculus Rift Gets Half-Life 2, Outerra and 3D Box Fractal Flythrough! (roadtovr.com)

Hesh writes: Now that all 10,000 developers will have received their dev kits by the end of May (http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/shipping-update-replacement-rewards-vr-meet-ups-and-half-life-2-in-vr/) completely new experiences and updates to popular games are flooding in. Valve's classic, Half-Life 2, has finally gained VR support that actually works beautifully (http://www.roadtovr.com/2013/05/11/how-to-configure-half-life-2-beta-for-your-oculus-rift-gameplay-video-5730). Also, the open-world 3D engine Outerra has added initial support for the Rift which will open up the possibility of planet-sized procedurally generated environments (http://www.roadtovr.com/2013/05/19/outerra-oculus-rift-support-coming-soon-5996). Lastly, a fly through generated with Boxplorer2 tailored for the Oculus Rift gives the mind-blowing experience of what it is like to fly through 3D fractal worlds (http://www.roadtovr.com/2013/05/20/boxplorer-2-oculus-rift-support-3d-fractal-6004); realtime support for this should be possible on today's hardware so hopefully it will arrive sooner rather than later!

Submission + - Fed up with publishers, former Mythic Employees turn to Kickstarter for funding (kickstarter.com)

BreezeDM writes: City State Entertainment, led by online game pioneer and Mythic Entertainment founder Mark Jacobs and code guru and CSE co-founder Andrew Meggs have started a Kickstarter campaign to fun their next MMORPG, Camelot Unleashed. From their Kickstarter page:

...publishers/designers tried to simply “out-WoW WoW”, leading to most MMORPGs becoming more risk-averse, more “casual player”-focused, and overall, less challenging. This produced, among other things, a loss of the pride and sense of accomplishment that came from succeeding in the older, more difficult titles.
