She dropped the computer off for recycling. If you throw out a bunch of stuff, and unbeknownst to you there is a mint copy of Action Comics #1 in that stuff, them once you throw it out it is no longer yours. In fact, the local municipaloty may have a stronger claim than you do in such a case.

I have no sympathy for her if she tries to push for more than the $100,0000. She's lucky the recycling center is ethical enough to offer it to her, as they're otherwise not obligated to give her a penny.

I fail to see how USB-C to Lightning cables would be indicative in any way of a dystopia. I quite enjoy the Lightning port, myself. It's compact, reversible, and robust. As long as the cable connects to standard USB, I fail to see the issue. The only issue I see is the rabid anti-Apple zealots who would seek to force Apple away from Lightning.

Or jailbreak (stay off 8.1.3!) and enjoy the style and smoothness of even the current base-level device (currently, iPhone 5c) with the freedom and customization available when you knock down the wall. Hell, my iPad has a command-line multi-system assembler that can, among others, handle 6502 and 68000 code. Can your mobile device assemble Sega Genesis code? Mine can :)

Jailbreak for packages distributed via Cydia (or .deb packages for APT, which is sideloading as far as Cydia packages go) and install Appsync Unified (not the Chinese "ppsync" crap) for sideloading of .ipa packages, in other words App Store apps.

Say again that sideloading is impossible on iOS without mentioning 8.1.3 and you're not telling the whole story.

How the World's First Computer Was Rescued From the Scrap Heap 126

anavictoriasaavedra sends this quote from Wired: "Eccentric billionaires are tough to impress, so their minions must always think big when handed vague assignments. Ross Perot's staffers did just that in 2006, when their boss declared that he wanted to decorate his Plano, Texas, headquarters with relics from computing history. Aware that a few measly Apple I's and Altair 880's wouldn't be enough to satisfy a former presidential candidate, Perot's people decided to acquire a more singular prize: a big chunk of ENIAC, the "Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer." The ENIAC was a 27-ton, 1,800-square-foot bundle of vacuum tubes and diodes that was arguably the world's first true computer. The hardware that Perot's team diligently unearthed and lovingly refurbished is now accessible to the general public for the first time, back at the same Army base where it almost rotted into oblivion.

Oxytocin Regulates Sociosexual Behavior In Female Mice 216

Chipmunk100 writes In a research article in the journal Cell scientists report that there is a subset of neurons that are vital in social interest of female mice for males during estrus, the sexually receptive phase of their cycle. They say that these neurons are responsive to oxytocin. The level of oxytocin rise when we hug or kiss a loved one. The BBC has an article on the findings as well, and reports that Without [oxytocin], female mice were no more attracted to a mate than to a block of Lego ... [The affected] neurons are situated in the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain important for personality, learning and social behaviour. Both when the hormone was withheld and when the cells were silenced, the females lost interest in mating during oestrous, which is when female mice are sexually active.
