Submission + - Internet, Open Source in the Third World (wordpress.com)

sanay writes: "This article represents the general aspect of the internet services provided in 3rd world countries like Nepal and also gives general information of Nepal. It highlights how international internet bandwidth gets relayed via satellites to third world countries and how open source softwares like Linux/Unix, FreeRadius, Apache, Squid, Bind, HTB, etc, are playing a big part in bringing the internet content to the rest of the population. The high price of international bandwidth using Satellites and it's negative performance due to high altitudes are also reviewed and how a third world country like Nepal is trying to improve them. It also looks at how the Internet and the World Wide Web can play a very useful role in shaping the future of these third world countries."

Submission + - Google SketchUp 6 on Linux and FreeBSD with Wine (blogspot.com)

Tom Wickline writes: "Google Sketchup runs on Linux and FreeBSD with Wine, this guide shows how its done.

Developed for the conceptual stages of design, Google SketchUp is a powerful yet easy-to-learn 3D software tool that combines a simple, yet robust tool-set with an intelligent drawing system that streamlines and simplifies 3D design. From simple to complex, conceptual to realistic, Google SketchUp enables you to build and modify 3D models quickly and easily. If you use Google Earth, Google SketchUp allows you to place your models using real-world coordinates and share them with the world using the Google 3D Warehouse."

Submission + - Japan to Use Laser to Beam Down Energy From Space (tfot.info)

Iddo Genuth writes: "Scientists from the Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka University in Japan and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have developed a technology for converting sunlight into laser beams. The technology is intended to stand in the center of JAXA's Space Solar Power Systems (SSPS) Project — aimed at creating the world's first space-based power generation system, which will continuously absorb solar energy and send it to Earth in the form of a powerful laser beam."

Submission + - The universe is a string-net liquid

johanwanderer writes: In March 2007, scientists may have discovered a new state of matter, leading to more fundamental understanding of the universe, that it may be a string-net liquid. An experimental solid, coined herbertsmithite contains an electron arrangement that was previously deemed imposible. It is theorized that electrons (and other more fundamental particles) are end points of strings (thus explaining entanglement) in a string-net liquid.

Submission + - Possible massive meteorite found

johkir writes: "Geologists think they may have found a meteorite the size of a small town. They were looking for oil but instead found space dust and a possible mammoth meteorite. The possible meteorite is buried deep in the ground about ten miles west of Stockton, Calif. in an area called Victoria Island. 3-D images show that the circular crater created by the rock is estimated to have been about 3 miles wide. The meteorite is also believed to have fallen to earth over 50 million years ago. Per the news feed, 'The impact would have been as powerful as 100-thousand atomic bomb blasts and would have been seen and heard for hundreds of miles.' BBC has the story, as does a local CBS affiliate (with flash video), and there is an abstract for the upcoming AAPG conference."

Submission + - Music Downloads Don't Decrease Album Sales

DocForbin writes: Koleman Strumpf, Koch Professor of Economics at The University of Kansas, and Felix Oberholzer-Gee of Harvard University analyzed millions of music downloads from 2002. Their Conclusion: "Downloads have an effect on sales that is statistically indistinguishable from zero." The findings, initially published in 2004, faced heavy criticism. After re-analyzing the data, Strumpf and Oberholzer-Gee defended their conclusions again in the Feb. 14 issue of the Journal of Political Economy.
