Submission + - Ready for your payroll software update? (hotair.com)

SEWilco writes: A federal payroll tax reduction for two months is being pushed by the President. Paying less money to the government seems good, but if the law is changed it will change the payroll taxes in January and February. Here in Slashdot many of us can well imagine what that will do to the many payroll systems which are already programmed with the 2012 tax rates.

Submission + - Licensing problem silences Internet radio stations (soundexchange.com)

SEWilco writes: "Hundreds of Internet radio stations use SWCast.net for services have been affected by a shutdown triggered by SoundExchange claiming lack of payment of royalty fees. Apparently SoundExchange has a new president and this might be a factor in acting on several years of missing payments. In the meantime, SWCast radio stations suffer after paying to legally broadcast."

Submission + - Copyrights and CD-Rs endanger audio history (yahoo.com)

SEWilco writes: A study by the Library of Congress has found that many audio recordings are being lost due to copyright restrictions and temporary media. Old audio recordings are protected by a various U.S. state copyrights so it's hard for preservationists to get and copy material. Recent data is threatened by being put on writable CDs because CD-Rs begin to lose data after a few years, so recordings from as recently as 9/11 and the 2008 elections are already at risk.

Submission + - Yet another Jupiter impact (reusable headline) (planetary.org) 1

SEWilco writes: Yet another optical flash on Jupiter has been spotted. The obvious explanation is that it's due to an impact event. If it is an impact, it's probably the third sighting in 14 months. Either large impacts are happening more often or they've been happening a lot more often than was previously believed. There are now many more automated telescopes with TV cameras watching the skies, so we're probably simply looking more often.

Submission + - AdWords to let ads follow you around the Internet (blogspot.com)

SEWilco writes: Through the AdWords blog, they've announced "retargeting". If you click on an ad, a cookie can be set which allows AdWords to show you more ads for that site. If you don't buy, you might see more ads elsewhere for that web site which you clicked on. It's not deja vu, it's what happens when something is changed.
