there is money involved and people to exploit, you dont need much more for this to happen, probably not so extreme as you put it out, but I would put my bets on that some of those poor sods are going to fist fight one day for a spot to sell just so they can earn that 10$ for drugs/food/rent or whatever

Was it needed in 1979?, only ones I could guess who needed that kind of cryptodisk software would have been governments at most?, as probably most system were closed off and there was no internet to speak of, thus the need for cryptodisk and combined with how slow computers were and the need of disk space thys making cryptodisk deemed a cost that you dont need to put any money into.

I dont know why people say that other civ's would see us as complete idiots if they followed our history, I would say it would be more likely that other civilisation that could see us would say, ohh look, they are doing exact the same things as we did x years ago

Even if things are painfully obvious there is no guarantee that they are the first choice of use, or the best. And then there is that you have to show which one is best to convince the backward people who claims another inferior way is better because they always have done it that way/always been like that. I would guess people like you are one of them. But that is just a guess and I guess we will need a study to show that or is it painfully obvious?
