Comment How is this "matching"? (Score 1) 227

That would suggest AT&T is matching the service and price. But AT&T is charging $29/month more, so it's hardly matching or even offering a competitive product.

And how much is snooping on all your activity actually worth? Is it $30 or less, or is it $70 or more? If the latter, and AT&T wants people to use their lines instead of google's, perhaps they should be offering it for free.

Comment Legislate how? (Score 1) 307

Legislation is a powerful tool, but there are limits on what it can do. Especially if the goals are so nebulous! What kind of legislation are we talking about? What exactly does the author want to legislate?

No, I had an economics professor who made the same point - that $2 ticket buys you a week of happy fantasies. It only becomes wasteful (or fiscally dangerous) if you buy several tickets, or worse, scratch-offs. Those are dangerously addictive, and the "fun" is over in minutes as opposed to days.

Comment Re:What are Autism rates in Mississippi (Score 5, Interesting) 297

Apparently the CDC only has data from 11 States, and Mississippi isn't one of them. Other groups have more data available, but so far the best compilation I've found is at some anti-vax site - http://vaxtruth.org/2012/04/wh... Their chart has Mississippi ranked 44th for autism rates, West Virginia is 39th.

And yeah, that does make the autism argument look real dumb. Especially when you look at the top 3 States for autism - Minnesota, Maine and Oregon; which interestingly enough also have some of the highest rates of non-vaccination.

Comment Where's the authority? (Score 1) 825

The US government has no claim over this money unless the companies bring it in (repatriation). Won't other nations take offence at the idea of the US government taking billions out of their banks?

And since the massive tax hit is the reason why they are keeping those funds overseas, what's to stop them from moving their corporate headquarters overseas to continue avoiding it?
